The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840's by Irish immigrants fleeing their country's potato famine. At that time, the favorite pranks in New England included tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates.

The custom of trick-or-treating is thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth-century European custom called souling. On November 2, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for "soul cakes," made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul's passage to heaven.

Just stating historical facts, this is not intended to spark a debate or flame war over religious belief or non-belief.

Just stating historical facts

Another interesting fact. The traditional pumpkin "jack-o-lantern", now the symbol of Halloween throughout the world, was originally carved from a turnip. http://www.holidays.net/halloween/pumpkin.htm

Your quite correct.  ;D

My wife and I were just discussing that fact last night and we both figured that carving a turnip would be a real PITA compared to a pumpkin... ;D

The only really useful thing about Halloween is the fact that every twelve months it reminds me of the fact that Pumpkins are full of essential vitamins, and therefore very good to eat....;D...!
...(rather than cutting holes in them, sticking a candle inside, and telling yourself what a good job you made of "that")... ;)...!
LOL...!

Paul...off to Mr. Sainsbury's Superstore to get an "edible" Pumpkin, and try out a few fried Pumpkin recipes...
...after melting the candle in the frying-pan... ;)...!
LOL...!

...I've just read a bit about growing your own Pumpkins in your garden.... 8)...!

Apparently they require enough space, similar to a Football Pitch, to grow....
Which...
If you have a very small garden...
Is guaranteed to annoy your neighbours, when his/her garden is overwhelmed with Pumpkin plants which have escaped, underground, from your garden...  :o...!
LOL...!

Paul...

I like pumpkin seeds, but we were too late for a pumpkin this year.  Maybe thats why I was so upset.  no, it wasnt.  I am not saying trick or treating is bad.  In fact, I used to love trick or treating as a kid.  But I think that once you are old enough to drive yourself to the store and buy candy, you shouldn't go trick or treating.

One of the most annoying things is that people drop candy wrappers and don't pick them up, so when I walk my dog I have to yank her back all the time so she doesn't eat them, and I really don't like doing that.
