As an American, I have to agree with everyone's sentiments here.  Although small, the British carrier force has proven its mettle, and should not be abandoned, nor should the Harriers be retired.
300,000 KM/S - Its not just a good idea, its the law.

really we don't fight the kind of wars where the fleet requires air defence......?

The Falklands wasn't really all that long ago, and the Iraqi Air Force could have mounted Exocet attacks during the Gulf War... now who else has simillar weapons?
