I wouldn't say he got what he deserved.  I think a simple apology to the girl, returning the money, and maybe some flowers or something to show there is no hard feelings would be what he deserves.  Like I said, this thing has taken on a life of it's own and is being blown out of proportion.  When it gets to the point where someone loses their job over it, it gets ridiculous.
