During their flights, pilots are constantly on the look-out for a suitable place to land should their engine suddenly go "quiet"...!
That's the time when, as Hagar mentioned earlier, your learnt gliding techniques come into action...

Practice it in the flight sim with the Cessna 172....
From a height of 5,000+ feet, cut your engine, search around, and see if you can safely land in a suitable spot below by carefully trimming your aircraft, observing the layout of the land, the type of land, the surface of the land, the wind direction, etc, .....and gliding there...

In reality, your life could depend upon a successful gliding technique and a safe landing...
