Yep, you can use it. I take my 15gb iPod with me on all flights. It usually gets some envious glares from other people though!  ;D

I can't think why you need all this stuff anyway. They show films & play a constant stream of music to keep the passengers from getting bored. They even have personal TV screens on most airlines these days. You will soon be able to use your cell phones & annoy everyone to your heart's content. :o (See Ashar's topic in the Real Aviation forum.)

I can't think where all this will end. It all involves noise in some way or another & I find being forced to listen to other people's noise extremely annoying. If you don't like the entertainment they provide what's the matter with a good book?

The whole point of bringing your own tunes is- well, it's your own tunes. But man, do I hear you about the annoyance factor. I hate having to endure the tiny, tinny version of somebody else's favorite music leaking out from their headphones (and I won't start about cellphone yellers except to say "It's not a tin can on a string- why yell?"). But the better headphones seem pretty quiet, and if someone's being discreet with the volume, it doesn't bother me.
I prefer to read, and I wish most people would follow suit. Entertainment value of a window seat aside, I generally dread flying commercial (usually coach, of course) .It's like being stuck in an elevator with some random people for several hours... almost spoils the fun of flying!

Yup. ;)  Unless there's a bomb in it... in which case I recommend leaving it at home.  But that's just me.

YEY!! Finally something fun to do other than watching stupid in-flight movies (Even though I'll be travelling with Emirates). The only cool thing 'bout Emirates is the Forward Cam and Downward Cam. The forward cam is like set up in the cockpit. Oh, and did I menton take-offs and landings in 777-300? ;D ;D

one of the nice things about my phone is it has approved FAA "Airplane Mode". yep i can look up a number, can't call it though. although it was handy downloading tetris deluxe, really passes the time on regional flights to south bend.

in basic words, cellphones with airplane mode, well they do everything except what they're supposed to do. you'd have more fun with your phone off.

I've brought my Dell DJ (15gb) onto my reg. flights, and had no problem.

Ive seen people using portable CD players sence the first time i flew.  I think you can use anything as long as it does not transmit a signal.  I used my laptop when i still had it.

And inflight entertainment on some airlines is a joke...5 hour flight on Northwest 757 and no inflight movie eather way.  There was screens all up and down the isle :-/  That was a couple years ago Detroit to Seatle...Litteraly a one day trip to meet a family member petrified of flying..(She paid for the ticket).  Got into Seatle just to leave about 3 hours later:P  But one thing NW has is good chicken in there meals.  Cant say much for the Lasania :-/

I have read enough safety articles in "Flying" written by very experienced GA pilots and ATP's regarding the subject of personal electronics aboard an aircraft.  The FAA is very over cautious and behind the curve on this.  It would take more cell phones, Ipods, mobile PC's and CD players and such than what an A-380 load of passengers could carry before VHF signals are effected.  Also, FMC's on most airliners get their primary locational data from a much older although high tech version of what was used since the early 60's.  INS.  And there's no way an INS can be effected by any sort of transmission or electronic bleed.

Ok heres why the FAA/CAA have not certified cell phones and such onboard. The cost to do so would be alot. You cant just say one rule for all, because each brand and type of cell phone puts out a differant amount of energy, while it may be little and non effective to the plane, it still means they have to certify each one individually, and with hundreds of phone models on the market its not surprising they dont want to rush into it.

I can remember, not so long ago either, when playing portable radios was banned on trains in this country. Not for any safety reasons but purely to avoid annoying other passengers. Unfortunately common decency & respect for others seems to be a thing of the past.
