Last time I was all shtuffed up (and nauseous from all the nighttime mucus), I used many of the remedies mentioned above plus: garlic. Before bed, eat at least one whole fresh clove. It's intense, even for a garlic-lover. You can get all kinds of processed and de-stinkified garlic, but I like the unaltered  stuff. It helps.  Or, if you have time, make some garlic soup.  But yes, cold treatments are only ways to alleviate symptoms.  You either get the 24-hr. bug, or you get the typical long-weekend bug, or you're miserable all winter...
