Me, I'm scared to death of flying.

I've found having a plane around you reduces this feeling considerably.  ;)

Alas, man hath no wings.  ;D

I'm not scared of flying. The only time it's ever got slightly worrying was on a flight back from Ireland in 2003. We got over the airport to find thick thick fog and visibility down to less than 500 yards. Then the pilot thought he could see a gap in which we could land. So we started the decent through the worst turbulence I've ever felt, then just as you thought we would be touching down a small gap in the clouds floated past my window, the ground was a long way off and getting smaller then the wheels came in and we diverted to Exeter.

I used to be afraid of heights. But a morbid curiosity caused me to start climbing things and now I only feel uneasy if someone else is holding the other end of a rope thats holding me up.

I think thats an imortant point: as long as you control the situation yourself, the fear is gone...only when youre sitting back in the cabin you start getting nervous.

You dont know the pilot, but hes got your life in his hands....anyway, when youre using a cab its the same thing! anyone afraid of taking cabs?

I will start here:

One of the reasons folks like me are frightened of heights is:
- when your standing on a balcony of an apartment building you can have an inclination of how high you are by seeing the side of the building down to the ground
-standing on a ladder is the same thing...you can use whatever the ladder is leaning against to judge how high you are
-being on a roof...same thing...you use the sides of the building to judge how high you are

-in an aircraft there are no sides to come up and meet the aircraft...therefore it is very hard to tell how high you are without looking at your altimeter.
-as an instructor I used to cover the altimeter on the student and ask him to tell me when he was at proper circuit height....all he needed was the vertical speed and a time piece
-I did have one smart ass officer who knew what I was going to do from previous students and worked it out with the GCA controller to tell him when he was at circuit height....that only happened once ;)LOL

-it might surprise you how many pilots ARE afraid of heights AND how many are nervous about riding as passengers and not only in aircraft but cars, buses and trains as well
-I will give you one reason and that is we are used to being in control

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
P.S. Distances is another topic you could touch on...how many folks are able to judge say 100yards or 1000ft?

I reckon I could. Distances are far easier to judge than heights.

I am. I can't walk to the edge of a cliff, roof, ect and look down. I have to crawl to the edge and look down while lying on my stomach.

What's even more odd is that I enjoyed skydiving. Go figure ;D

Not really Andrew :)

The only way to judge your height in skydiving is with an altimeter...right?

So there are no other visual clues like walls to give you an idea how high you are.

I hate heights, and always prefer to be in control, so I'm not a big fan of passenger flying...

...That's why I chose to do the job I do :P  ???

Im not scared of heights per se ... I've worked in jobs were working at height was a pre requisite. The only times I've had any sense of fear  was when the platforms I was working on were unstable .... once stableised properly .... I was fine.

If you want to experience real disorientation and vertigo  then try this .

40ft up in a pitch black room, with thick black curtains 2ft either side, on a moving platform focusing a spotlight onto the black floor 40ft below...... but ..... the lamp is on a moving bar also. Newtons law of equal and opposite comes into play but with no stable points of reference your eyes and inner ear signals become scrambled ........ in short .....

Its a Head **** .

In a flying analagy its the same dissorientation experienced by pilots flying in fog.... but they have insruments to refer to ... assuming they use them.

cheers

I love flying. In fact, the more turbulence, the better. If we are on final approach, and the runway is nowhere in sight, WEEEEEEE! Bush flying into a little gravel strip where there is no possability of go-around.... what a rush. I love to fly, even when it is calm out, but I prefer things to happen. My favorite flight of all time was when I was about 12. I was flying right seat in a PA-31-350 Chieftain (because the seatbelt in seat number 8 was broke, and I knew the pilot)  from Kenai to Anchorage, and it was as turbulent as I've ever seen. All the way flare, but it went smooth in ground effect, and touchdowns was smooth. The plane would jump around in the air, banking 15 degrees one way, then 10 degrees the other, the ass-end being kicked side to side, and gains and losses of 200 feet of altitude. That was so much fun. I wish I could do it again.

Nah, not really scared. Also, if anyone is scared by it or interested in all the workings, i recommend 'The Flying Book' by David Blatner, fairly interesting read. ;D
