I personally can't imagine why anyone would want more than 20 .... maybe 30 max ..aircraft in their FS.

I've never had more than about 15 in addition to the default at any time...

Why would anyone want more?  ??? Seriously?

PAI is a LOT better compared to the default stuff

Unfortunately, the PAI planes take up a bit of space in the folder, making it hard to search for your own planes.  It would have been nice if they could have had their own folder.

Personally, I have about 60 planes representing the major achievments so far in Flight Simulator and a few older versions that no one has made a better model for.

I have 132 FS9 aircraft, but my new system is only 2weeks old, and I'm still working out the kinks. I only fly a few Spits, Tiffies, Hurricanes, and an occasional Mustang B, but it's nice to have choices.

For practical purposes I agree. However, who said we have to be practical in this hobby with so many free goodies to try? ;)

I wouldn't mind betting that most people here have at least some aircraft installed to their own sim that they never use & have completely forgotten about. This is no big problem as a few extra aircraft should not affect the sim in any way. A large amount like 497 might be overdoing it slightly. ::)

Using 3rd party aircraft for AI traffic can easily double the amount of aircraft you need. These can easily be tweaked not to display on the menu but the folders still need to be installed or the AI traffic will not work as advertised.

It's often easier to leave them where they are. Deleting them could cause problems with others you do use. Tidying up the AIRCRAFT folder is also the main cause of deleting important default files like default.dp, causing all AI traffic to suddenly & mysteriously disappear. If you're a particularly tidy person, dragging unwanted aircraft into a Hangar subfolder is the ideal solution for organising your 3rd party aircraft. They can then be safely deleted later if no problems raise their head.

PS. In FS2002 the AI aircraft are defined by their title= name in Aircraft.cfg. If this is the case with FS9 I see no reason why the folder names of PAI aircraft should not be changed to whatever you wish.

It's not a matter of flying them all.

@ JVC : This is my PAI, AIA and FSP collection.
SO I don't fly them myself but see them around while flying from A to B. Since the world is bigger then the area you fly in ( FS only shows everthing closer than 51 miles) i've got the traffic spread out across the globe.

To keep confusion to the minimum I'm using a naming system that will tell me wheter its a AI or flyable aircraft. All my PAI folders start with PAI for instance.

So for flying I use a litimted number of aircraft and I'm very selective with the scenery I'm installing.

For my first few years I suppose I was a bit of a "hunter / gatherer" and used to download a lot, mainly out of curiosity.    When I realised that the quality varied a lot I dumped stuff quickly if it wasn't up to the mark.

The problem seems to have cured itself now as no-one seems to be putting out much for FS2002 anymore - it's all gone over to ACOF (unless you count an inexhaustable supply of Twotters.)    I used to check the downloads, (FS2002 props.) daily but there's not much point now.       However, I suppose with the rate they were created there's a limit to how many planes there are still out there.
