The 88 was the most effective artillery piece of the 1930's and 40's.  A small museum near my home has one in its origional desert colours.  Luvely..... ;D

I suppose the answer (re. Dive bombing)comes down to the fact that these guys were trained to do the job, they didn't sit on a computer screen to do it.  When your life depends on doing something right it must be a great incentive.

I'm quoting this from a book called 'Fighting Aircraft of World Wars One and Two'.

"Among the advantages of dive-bombing is the fact that anti-aircraft fire has never succeeded in stopping a dive-bombing attack"

The author goes on to say that once the dive bombers entered the attack dive, the AA batteries were totally powerless as they were not able to train their guns high enough to be able to hit the incoming dive bombers. Instead the AA batteries would train their batteries at a determined exit route and wait until the aircraft pulled out of the dive.
