what else happened in 1903?
(from my "book about the century")

-edward VII becomes king of india
-the VfB leipzig is the first german football champion
-the ford A is the first car for the "common man" (costs $950)
-the "tour de france" is being held for the first time
-new speed record of an electric train: 210kph
-panama becomes independent
-etc...

Jezz...(not to get off subject) I never knew Diarrhea could kill...I just always found it rather uncomfortable. :P

You'd be surprise how many of common everyday sickness' that people just shrug off in the year 2003, that would be a death sentence in 1903. Even the common cold could become pneumonia and kill...US President William Henry Harrison (Ninth President-
1841) -  Died: April 4, 1841.
Caught a cold that developed into pneumonia.
He died in Washington D.C. a month after taking office. He was the first president to die in office.

We have made some staggering advances over the last 100 years. There are a few things on your list that I wouldn't mind going back to. I'm not sure we've advanced in some areas at all. In fact, quite the reverse.

Only 8% of the homes had a TELEPHONE.  

There were only 8,000 CARS in the US and only 144 miles of paved ROADS.

There were only about 230 reported MURDERS in the entire US.


I could manage quite happily without a telephone & a lot of other things that are now regarded as essentials. Salaries/wages are relative to the cost of living so any comparison there is pointless. Apart from the illnesses I think the quality of life, although shorter, might have been generally better & less stressful.
