Craig. I suggest that travelling at supersonic speed is a completely different proposition to the speed of light.

I'm told that some stars I can clearly see in the night sky with my rapidly failing eyesight actually disappeared millions of Earth years ago. ::)

LOL:)
in the end its all theory and whats if's. lets face it, it is very unlikely in any of our lifetimes that it will happen.
although according to star trek history in 2063 after the third world war zephram cochrane will make the first faster than light trip:) so some mays till be alive for that ;D

lol yes some stars you see are now dead:)
Mr Hagar, you and Mr Fozzer are those two old guys in line at the supermarket who complain about everything moving on so fast with the world and how the young hooligans of today are taking over, and that all this technology is no good for the planet, as you managed to survive without even a TV ;D
Cheers mate:)

Don't mock the afflicted young Craig me lad. You will be just like me & old Foz one day. I guarantee it. That's if you survive of course. :P

Looking at all the doddering old fogeys like us it might be difficult

actually i cant mock:) as i am rather jealous, you have gotten to experiance as you said things i never could. Man landing on the moon for the first time. England actually winning a football world cup. The greatest era in aviation, the explosion of television. Everything we have these days is nothing more than an expansion of what was created back when you were younger and even before. To experiance that would be great.

No need to be jealous. There's still plenty of exciting things going on. I have no wish to stop you dreaming, I still have my own. Plenty I haven't seen or done yet. ;)

Like most men worth their salt I'm just a 16 year-old lad who never grew up. Unforunately I'm now a tad restricted by my 60 year-old body. Things take a little longer than they used to, that's all. ::) ;D

PS. Anyone see where I left my glasses? ??? 8) ;D :D

I don't see what you're saying here, mate. Data travels at the speed that the medium by which it is transferred allows. Be it a hollow tube to yell into ;D or a fibre optic cable

Laser pulses were found to be leaving a box that they were fired at before they were detected entering it.
Yes that does sound confusing but NewScientist magazine readers will have probably read the article that explains it all.

Also we won the rugby world cup or have you forgotten.  Also it is likely we will man mission to Mars in our lifetime.

Maybe my problem with 'cottoning' onto your statement is my understanding of "data".  ???

Data to me is: information, facts, figures, whether they be numbers, letters, or any kind of symbol or pulse etc.
They all need to be transferred by a medium. How is Data itself, a travelling object or particle? To me it is the information contained within the transfer medium! ;) All data has to be 'converted' to a medium of some sort before it can be moved at all. These mediums have been electrical pulse (old telephone or Morse set), Radio waves, TV signals, Microwaves and even a scratch of lead on a peice of paper.  :D

How does data move at any speed, without a medium by which to travel?  ???

That's the purpose of my query. I hope it makes sence.  ;D ;)

to those who keep saying its impossible, no it isnt. We just havent gotten there yet. They said breaking the sound barrier was impossible but it happend when we had the technology and understanding, they said we couldnt go into space or to the moon, but we did when we had the technology and understanding. Right now we dont have the technology one day we will.

now loomex, i am not really on about if you were to shine a light while traveling said speed, i am on about if you were to plot a direct course back to the sun out into space at the speed of light, i know it wouldnt be possible without hitting something but theoreticlly speaking. your only light source is the sun the light which is coming from it would be traveling slower than you so to see any light you would as someone suggested, have to look back. and who suggested hitting air would be dangerous? in space there is no air, remember if your ever to be able to travel these speeds it wont be on a planet.

As you know Craig, I'm an avid ST fan (in fact all Sci -Fi), but I fear there is a huge difference between the examples you've given (sound, the moon etc) and travel at C.
Although, apparently there are Scientists, more cluey than all of us that are for and against the possibility. So.....................I'll say, I just can't see the logic or possibility of it, but then who am I?? ;D ;)

P.S. Space does have air and other small particles that could interfere with extreme velocity travel. It's not a complete vacuum, as some think.  ;D ;)

So, the speed of light and time travel go hand in hand.... Interesting...

....I can't speak for Foz, but I become more cynical with each day that passes. ::)

Quite right Doug...
The next thing is, they will be thinking that they can land men the Moon... :o...!
..Or even travell at the speed of light down a wormhole... :o... :o...!
Whatever next will they think of... ::)...!
Up to no good I've no doubt... :'(...!

It's just as well that you and I keep our feet firmly planted on terra firma and advise them against getting involved in such dangerous activities.... ;)...!

Paul.

P.S. I'm sure the woman in front of me has 11 items in her shopping basket, I've counted them.
So much for a quick service, 10 item or less, queue... >:(...!

The data is simple, pulse for on, no pulse for off. It does not mean anything much.

Waves don't work at all in a vacuum (ie space) however particles work very well.
