OK guys, I added some new options.

I have read all the HP and LOTR books exept for the Silmarrilion(sp?), which I am thinking about taking out from a library.  We are currently reading the Hobbit in Advanced Reading, but I am rereading the LOTR books, and compared to them the Hobbit is rather boring.

Also,  what is the Silmarrilion about? ???

LOTR. definetly.
im getting the full DVD set when it's out
never read harry potter, and im not so into fantasy stories so there is something that makes tolkien stand out.
Try to read it in english if you can, tolkien translations don't have a good reputation

The Silmarillion fills in the entire history of Middle Earth before TLOTR.  It tells the story of the creation of the creation of the universe, the coming of the elves, how the elves split into separate races, and their exile from Valinor (a kind of Valhala) and the creation of men and dwarves.  It also tells of the dark Lord Morgoth, of whom Sauron was a studnet/acolyte/servant.  Oddly enough, there is no mention of Hobbits.  The narrative tells of the creation of the 3 Silmarrils, in whom shone the last light of the great tree of Valinor.  Morgoth seized the Silmarils and poisoned the tree, killing it.  Eventually the story leads into the quest for Feanor the Elf to recover the jewels and his utter destruction in the attempt.  That's a poor summary of something that covers so much, but it's a start.  The events in The Silmrillion are referenced in The Hobbit and LOTR
