I think the best way to do it is to treat them just as words.  If the syllable has a vowel, then pronounce it.  .exe: "ehx-uh".  If no vowel, treat it as a abbreviation.  .w3d: "dub-ya-three-dee"  .tmp is the only exception for me, as I just say temp or try to pronouce tmp.

 I have always just said the letters, never really thought about it any further until now.

Hint: (re: the PMP part) I would use my .prx(singular though)to accomplish the first letter "P"and, my pants, would also be involved in this act. :-[
