in the ones in your computer there is just plastic and copper wire.

in the big ones for power plants they use to get MORE voltage before sending it through the high-tension lines they have oil coolers

Nooo.... they pump the oil around the box in which the copper wire is in, and through the center of the thing

Code: Select all
**********
* ------ *
* | *  | *
* | *  | *
* | *  | *
* ------ *
**********

*: oil
Lines: copper coil

A 220-to-14 volt transformer will get quite hot if run at high Amps...
The things they use in power stations do (around) 150Kv (150.000 volts) to 380KV (380.000 volts) so imagine the heat generated by these things

power has been out for eight hours now, and the governor has said that 60% of New York State is still without power.

All told, some fifty million people lost power today...scary.

People here in upstate New York are in a tizzy...filling gas tanks, stockpiling food and water....Christ, it's a power outage.  SIMMER DOWN!
Great edit, Bob.

Weird, seeing how most of the power that NYC and the rest of the state of New York comes from Pennsylvania. Hey, my lights are on. ;)

Never understood why folks run out and get water and bread for heavy snows, storms, etc. If anything, pick up a six pack and a pizza so you can munch as you watch it on CNN. Ok, at least two six packs and two pizzas. If anything, the beer will help you stay calm, AND beer is made of grains.. so its' good fer ya. ;)

Here in upstate Ny, at about 4:15 the lights flickered for a bit then went to half power then out then back on then half power and then off and on and off in cycle.  Full on now but it varies area to area...friends 10 minutes away have no power.  People are still stranded on the island, and NORAD ahs called up the 174th Fighter Wing to do Combat Air Patrols...talk about caution!(yes I just heard them fly off east)
