I've been looking for 'Das Boot', & 'Battle of Britain', but no stores here sell them >:(

I guess i'll have to buy them over Amazon.

But what's the difference between a director's cut version and a 'normal' version???

In the case of Das Boot the directors cut is the restored version.

The theatrical release is about 3 hours long, but the tv series version lasts for 5 hours

Andrew, Das Boot is probably one of the best movies I've ever seen.  Just take a leak before you watch it, it is LONG! :D

I don't think Red October is based on a true story.  I know K-19 was, but only because of the movie that was released last year, with Harrison Ford.  Hmm For is a chopper pilot and was in both Patriot Games AND K-19.  This thread probably wouldn't exist without him... ::)

Das Boot is the second best [movie] only to Saving Private Ryan because:
  • It tells the story from the side most people don't want you to see.
  • No phony accents >:(, hard to have a German accent when you're speaking German.
  • As far as I can tell, historically correct.
  • Not dramatised in any way.  Even Battle of Britain had a bit of a hard to follow storyline twisted in.  Although nowhere near as bad a Pearl Harbor! >:(
  • You feel for the characters.  You really end up hating the (I think) Hurricanes at that certain point and event in the movie (Don't want to give it away!)  Only other movie that made me 'connect' so much with the characters was Black Hawk Down.
The Devil's Advocate.

Looked for it on Amazon, but they only seem to have a directors cut version that's about 3 hours long. There is another version there, but it doesn't even say how long it is.

Amazon also has different versions of Battle of Britain. One version is on VHS that was originally released in 1945.

Another version is on VHS was released 1969, starring Michael Caine & Trevor Howard. I'm assuming this is the famous version movie.

Amazon also has the film on DVD, but according to reviews, the VHS edition is far better then the DVD version

Andrew. The Battle of Britain film you want was first released in 1969 starring Michael Caine & Trevor Howard. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6301965817/qid=1058123598/sr=2-2/ref=sr_2_2/102-3043594-0808106

I would suggest you go for the original subtitled version of Das Boot. This makes watching it a tad more difficult but the apparently badly dubbed version would completely spoil it for me.

I couldn't be bothered to watch U-571. After Woody's & Tempest's comments I knew I would hate it.

If you want a decent war flick (napoleonic though.) Get Captain Horatio Hornblower with gregory peck as the captain. thats a great film.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr >:(. I forgot how gung-ho U-571 was.
They managed to operate a german sub, and sink another german underwater and defeat a destroyer. The bit that really got me was when they shot the radio tower even though none of them were gunners, yet the 4 (?) turrets on the destroyer failed to hit a sub!

Actually i just saw that part and the sub did get hit once near the stern and made a big gash.  There were also some nearby hits and all. The movie does have its fake moments and 50% historical plot but i guess its good enough.

I'm not completely sure which version is which at Amazon, but is this it?

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... d&n=507846

It's in DVD format, it's run time is 209 minutes, and features German & English audiotracks, plus English subtitles. I guess this means you can listen to it in German, but read the English text on screen?

Is this what you mean?

I'm really not sure either Andrew. The version I saw was the original German TV mini-series with subtitles. As I remember it was something like 5 hours long & was shown here over several successive nights. It seems it has been completely remastered twice for the big screen since then. The latest "Director's Cut" version is shorter & significantly different to the original. http://uboat.net/special/movies/index.html/title/1
Why they have to mess around with these classics is beyond me.

Thank you!

It doesn't always have to be realistic all the time.

The action scenes while gung ho do give off some tense moments. Although I don't like Bill Paxman? Paxton? I think he did quite well in this film.

Well, it's ok I guess if you don't mind little inconsistencies like Americans taking credit for something the British did...

Well yeas that does annoy me quite alot. Although they say at the end it would have been nice if they said it at the beginning that it was captured by us.
