Your Experiences with Earthquakes!

I was in one quite recently, in Shropshire (bit more random than cornwall )
It was about 3am in the middle of November. The door started shaking, the thing is it shakes anyway, but this was bit bigger than normal. A Glass of water i had fell onto the floor and shattered, and my car alarm was set off. So off i go outside in my boxers (in November!) step on the broken glass and get some in my foot. Hobble out to the car, spend ages hobbling over the gravel to it. spend even longer fiddling with the alarm button because the batteries were flat. and hobble back up and step in the galss once more
I didnt sleep much that night

It was only a little one, and we don't get that many here
as our country, (England), is quite stable.
The people I am concerned about are all those who live along the San Andreas Fault, from north of San Francisco down to Los Angeles.
They reckon that in the next 30 years there will be anothe BIG one which will totally destroy San Francisco

well i certainly know where i am not going for my holidays any time soon:)
been in a few tornado warnings, but never been near one, closest was 50 miles away thank god although there was a small one in bristol a few years ago.
and never been in an earth quake either and something i would rather not have to be in to

Hi Andrew,
 I was in that 7.1 Seattle quake you were in.
 I was at work in West Seattle and had just finished replacing a hi-limit fill switch in a carbon silo.  I started the refill sequence to check operation when the quake began.  I thought to myself, "Boy this thing is filling hard, I think I'll wait outside til the cycles done."  Now this silo is about six feet wide and forty feet tall so I thought being outside was a good idea.  As I stepped through the silo's door I thought, "Man, its filling so hard its even shaking the (silo's concrete) pad!!"
 That's when violent shaking started.  I'd been throught a few earthquakes in California and knew enough to be aware of my surroundings, so my attention was 100% focused on that carbon silo.  Which ever way it fell I was going the other!!   Fortunately the silo stayed put, but it was still quite a ride!!

it's interesting to see how many other people here were in the seattle earthquake a couple years ago.

I hope i'm never in another one again.

Never felt the earth shake, but I can attest to watching a Tornado go through the backyard a few years ago..... I was living on a ten acre lot at the time and this twister missed the house by a couple of hundred feet.....too close for comfort if you ask me......I checked for damage down the field and found "new" trees had been planted without any roots.......the farm next door, a half mile away was not so lucky. Their drive-shed roof was lifted off in one piece and re-deposited after being turned 90 compass degrees---tops of their two silos were removed and several farm implement vehicles were tumbled across the fields like Tonkas...........what a day ! Best news...............nobody hurt

Ken, are there really tornados in vancouver island???

There was a tornado near Seattle within the last couple years, but it was so small it was hardly worth calling it a tornado

Andrew, I should have been more clear.  When that storm passed by me, I was living in Ontario.

This shot, although not shot by me, was of the actual tornado which passed through here and did quite a bit of damage to a small village called Violet Hill.

...so that's why you moved from Ontario to Vancouver... ...!!

Just looked at my map, (as I do), Ontario and Vancouver seem to be on the same latitude....(Canada)...
I would have thought that the weather would be too cold and stable for tornado's to appear...?
They are normally more common in the South-Eastern and Southern States with warm winds blowing off the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico...?
We get the, (very), occasional tiny little, low-level, twisters in the Summer, enough to scoop-up a few leaves and straw under certain very local conditions. They appear and disappear within minutes..... ...!

i remember when i lived in medicine hat, it got rather warm in the summer especially on the plains. dont know if its the same in ontario and vancouver though
that tornado looks to be what An F2 Maybe F3 on the scale

Foz,  my friend, get out your trusty little map once again and take a look west of the ciry of Vancouver......there is an island off the coast called Vancouver Island.......thats where I now reside (Comox Valley), and the weather here is very much different from the mainland. and as for Ontario, well thats a province. If you have enough detail, look northwest of Toronto, on a line that is south of Lake Simcoe, and you may see Orangeville, Shelburne, and Grand Valley.  I lived in the country in the middle of that triangle.

let me put it this way, i have lived in Los Angeles all my life, and have never been out of town when an earthquake hit :-/
