Yes, it's an Indian word. The politically correct term is "native American".

I've heard of the Choctaw and Choctawhatchee's pronunciation; my Native American ancestry is Algonquian, however, and your link doesn't provide the meaning of hatchee?

Native Americans/American Indians:

Who, and when, was it decided that America was going to be called; "America"...(What was it called before?).
...and who decided that the various indigenous/native group of people who lived there were going to be referred to as; "Indians".

I am always interested to find out how, when, and why, various countries got their present names!

Without researching it I believe that America was originally just part of the "New World", there being no European recognized colonies or countries.

Then, as every American schoolboy knows, America was named after Amerigo Vespucci. No one has any idea who Amerigo Vespucci was.

By all rights it should have been named "Columbus Land" but (again, without research) legend tells us that Columbus never reached the continental mainland, just the islands. So maybe it should have been called Eastern Norseland.

Columbus named the natives "Indians" because he thought he has reached the outskirts of Asia (India).

Everyone knew the earth was round. They just didn't know how big it was and that there was an entire continent between Europe and Asia.

..the origin of the phrase;..."A bump in the night!".... :o ...!

I wonder if the inhabitants were comfortable with being called; "Indians"?

..if not...what else would they be called?

I doubt the natives cared as much what they were called as much as they were concerned with being deliberately infected with smallpox.

It is politically correct to refer to them as native Americans. Or specifically by tribe. We have a lot of Seminoles and Miccosukee in Florida but the Seminoles get better press.

I am always fascinated with North American history, regarding the European, etc, explorers/invaders. Mainly because its so new, compared to ancient Europe and Asia.

Lots to learn!

We had so much success invading the New World we decided to invade other planets.

(What was it called before?).
In the "old" world, not a thing -- it was beyond the edge of that known world. After its discovery, Vespucci wrote about the "new" world and got his name applied to it.

...and who decided that the various indigenous/native group of people who lived there were going to be referred to as; "Indians".
To add to Webb's answer: There were numerous tribes, many of whom confederated, that lay claim to specific territory. Languages were different and many had a name for another tribe and its territory (this would often be "the land of the [tribal name]") that was different than its own. If the European explorers/colonists didn't apply a name of their own, they borrowed from whoever first gave one to them (thus, it may not be that tribe's name for themselves). Since the name was from an unfamiliar language, Europeans frequently corrupted the pronunciation, especially when attempting to write it down later.
