I remember a time when the the very mention of the word; "Policeman" would fill us with fear and dread, and ensure that we behaved ourselves!

..any unacceptable behaviour would result in the threat of imprisonment, and at the very least an immediate clip round the Ear, by BOTH our Dad, and the local Policeman!
...problem sorted!
...it ensured our progress into responsible Teenagers and Adults.... ...!

During most of my Childhood, living in the Countryside, I spent most of my time at the top of very tall Trees....
...indeed, every time my Mum was looking for me outside, she only had to look skywards to locate me....
...and I never fell out of one....I'm still here!.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

Excellent! I'm still not sure how I survived my childhood.

I am into my 40's now (and some distance behind some members of course ) but when I was six, I was out with my best mate from dawn to dusk. I came home for meals and that was about it. Everyone in the village knew us (my grandfather owned the local pub) and we never felt safer. Today, my four and six year old boys are never out of my sight

I was educated out behind the barn and that is the way I helped bring up our lot.     

Respect for authority and think before you speak was very important.

However and I say however we never heard:
-a child should be seen and not heard
-do as I say and not as I do
-go ask your father or go ask your mother...a decision was usually made immediately by that parent and it was not questioned

Our individual lives revolved around each other and lively discussions were held at the kitchen table.

My third oldest brother and I had many a discussion out behind the barn, there was only a years difference in our ages. 
When it was over either dad or one of my other brothers would say I had to stop leading with my head.        

When I asked one of my older brothers how I did I almost always got the same reply:  Okay...you lasted about as long as a paper shirt in a bear fight...

"Yeap", I remember the days when you know what copper was on duty, cause they were "walking the beat" as they say. And it was pretty cool when I think about it, that as a kid it was OK to call your beat cop by his first name as long as you said Officer first, mornin Officer Eli. Some times they would roll up there sleeves on a hot summer day and throw a few pitches in our stickball game (and if you were a little kid you might have gotten the honor of holding his hat). You would Hagar, but they would be used in evidence against you when someone took offence at what you are doing or you are reported by the person developing your pictures
