It seems quite a lot of Harriers are lost by the Marines. It makes me wonder what the Marines do differently to the RAF.

It seems quite a lot of Harriers are lost by the Marines. It makes me wonder what the Marines do differently to the RAF.

Maybe they operate larger numbers of them in less favourable conditions.

Mind you, the RAF Harrier loss rate isn't too great. We must average over 1 per year.

Nope. The USMC operated the AV- 8B, sometimes known as the Harrier II Before this they operated the AV-8A. The RAF have operated the Harrier GR1 and GR3, which were our equivalents of the AV-8A, and then when McDonnell Douglas led the upgrade to the AV-8B along with BAe in the mid 80s, we upgraded to the Harrier GR5, which has been upgraded to GR7, and finally GR9 status.

Can our US friends post any updates in the local press - there are a few Brits flying Harriers with the USMC.
