More "SPAM" discussions...?

Postby Fozzer » Wed May 10, 2006 5:52 am

Hello Lads...!

another one of those discussions on annoying "Spam" E-Mail... ;)...!

I get between 50 and 100 "Spam" E-Mails  in my Mail every day.
Most of it is directed by my ISP to my "Junk Mail" box for me to "Delete".
I have tried "Blocking" it, but it seems to be sent back to the originator, and then returned back to me as "Postmaster, Undeliverable Mail", etc...and the problem gets worse...!

My Norton, AVG and Adaware, etc, running in the background prevents me from getting Virus's, etc, while browsing the 'Net, but they don't stop annoying Spam from overloading my Mail Box every day...!

I regularly check for incoming "Trojans", (Spyware), but nothing there..;)...!
I never use my Wanadoo/Firefox browser for sending out Mail, and the only mail I should be receiving is notification of daily news via my registration to the "Washington Post", "Kron4 news", "BBC news", etc.
I have set my Internet Security Options to the maximum, and regularly delete "Cookies".
(I don't use "Outlook Express" for incoming mail).

I run:
Windows XP Pro. Service Pack 1*, Firewall set to "on"
Browser. Mozilla Firefox with Ad-Blocker.
Mail. Wanadoo/Freeserve with a mail filter, via my Firefox Browser.
Norton, AVG and Adaware.

So why am I, and my poor Service Provider, getting all this crap delivered to us every day from sources which are always hidden from view...?
Where does it all come from...?

My E-Mail address is only given to a few "Safe" news sites and is never broadcast elsewhere on the Internet.
So how do these annoying folks get access to my E-Mail address.
Registered Companies don't seem to suffer from it...
...how do they overcome it...?
...so is this problem common to everyone else...?
It is illegal in the UK to send out these Spam mails, but it seems to be sent to us from abroad, therefore by-passing the UK the Law.

Cheers all...!

Paul...I don't need a Rolex watch, or medical assistance, or Penis extensions**,  etc, etc...

* Don't suggest Service Pack 2...trust me....;)...!
** I am quite satisfied with the present contents of my trousers...thank-you very much..;)...!

..mm.. well I sympathise with you Fozz.........I was getting well over a hundred such emails when I was with Virgin and almost gave up the internet altogether because of it.....imagine how I felt when arriving home from 14 days holiday and having to download going on for 2000 emails.........horrific.

I got a new pc 18 months ago and took on Freeserve Broadband and I can honestly cross my heart and say that I NEVER get Spam emails...........or Pop ups. Why this is have no idea but not one Spam Email in all that time takes some believing but it is true. The only thing I can think of is that I have NEVER given out my email address on websites and even my own website has it as a .jpg image so it can't be read by the so called trawling software. It's also a strange sort of format so that maybe helps........

I have just touched wood so should be ok. If I knew the reason I would "bottle it" I'd make a fortune.......so can't really help you Fozz, except to say that it doesn't HAVE to be like yours is. There must be plenty of people like me...surely I ain't the only one to get lucky..............commoner ;)

Well, that almost like asking for those "entertainment" pills and vulptuous women type emails, now is it!  ;D

Anyway... I find that using a email-adress by a serious provider helps tackling the unwanted emails. I'm with Belgacom skynet and don't get anything but what I've signed up for.

I'm also very carefull on that matter. When I don't thrust certain sites, I'll use my free hotmail-adress... they can spam that all they want!  ;D

So maybe you'll need broadband and an new email-adress,

Thus far (under 3 weeks), the only SPAM, as such, on my isp e-mail account is by the provider. They closed the free e-mail address (now reopened and empty) and msn emptied the free one I had with them due to no usage, on my part, for nearly 3 months; it's now receiving SPAM like it used to. The free msn acct is the one I used to communicate with various product suppliers online, if that is informative. If it gets too full, I'll just stop checking into it for a month or so. ;)

I receive very little in the way of spam these days. I assume this is due to the efforts of my ISP in blocking it. I have to wonder how much genuine mail it blocks as I seem to receive far less mail than I used to.

I once opened a Hotmail account to check it out for someone. Only one trusted friend knew the address yet within a couple of hours it was full of spam. I can only assume that this was sent by a random address generator constantly sending this stuff out wholesale. xxxx@hotmail etc. If you send enough out some addresses are bound to be genuine.  No matter how careful you are I don't know how you could protect against that.

My ISP, Wanadoo/Freeserve Mail Provider, is pretty successful in filtering out the Spam Mail I receive.
They download it into a separate "Junk Mail" folder in my Mail Box when I log-on.
The trouble is, I still receive it, and have to spend time deleting it...!!!
If I ignore it, I presume it will quickly fill up my Mail Providers own mail box and I may get a message of disapproval from them...!

As a matter of interest, where is our mail stored before actually reading it, or deleting it after logging on to our Mail Provider...
....on our computer, or the Mail Provider's computer...?

For good or evil, Spam Mail is not automatically refused/rejected or deleted automatically by the Mail Provider.

Cheers all...!

Paul.... 8)...!

P.S. I have had my nice E-Mail address for 20 years now, and I am very reluctant to change it.... ;)...!

...mm....maybe not quite twenty years Fozz, but I suspect that is the answer to your problem...........your email address must be the most well known address on the Web and on every legal and illegal emailing list in existance..

..Time for a change young man......you've been around too long.....(as the actress said to the bishop)...............commoner ;)

Winston Churchill and Lady Astor...;)...?

LOL...!

The name we use dates back to our early days of Computer programming, in the late 1970's, so I am reluctant to change it now....;)...!
I don't suppose the BBC would like to change their name after having it for so long....;D...!
Our Internet access, and our WWW address (the one we use now) was generated in 1996....10 years ago.

I just checked my new g-mail address and I have a mere 489 new spam messages. ;D  Good thing I don't get spam like that on my real e-mail account. ;)

:o I don't feel so bad now. I get 10-15, sometimes fewer spam emails per day on my hotmail account. I've always only used online emails like hotmail and yahoo. I don't know why, but I just prefer it over somethng like outlook or juno (is juno even around anymore?).

Used to have the same problem on my old Localnet dialup account.  I could never keep my inbox clean >:(  Sad part is I never submitted my email to more then a couple places.  I was getting over 250 spams a day after only being with their service for a week.  Not happy coming home from a week trip to find myself maxed out at around 2500 emails.  What ticked me off even more was there was no select all or delete all button at that time.  Solution that saved time...just set up another yahoo account and have used it ever since ;)  Over 400 spams a day find my "bulk" folder but a simple click takes care of that mess ;D  Its a life saver ...especialy since my Verizon DSL account is set up through yahoo as well ;)

There you go, Lads...!

Referring to the last couple of posts, it's obvious the problem is common worldwide, and  everyone (except a few.. ;)...) are constantly complaining about, it and it seems there is nothing that we or our Service Providers, can do about at at the moment...!!

Remember that Companies publish their E-Mail addresses on the Internet (unlike yours truly!) to enable the public to contact them and yet it seems they have successful ways of stopping junk mail from overloading their Mail Boxes!

One of my Daughters is the Secretary for a large College in Cornwall, and she tells me that they do not get Spam/Junk Mail...!
How do they manage it, I ask myself...;)...!

At least my Mail Service Provider (Freeserve) filters most of my Spam Mail into a separate "Junk" folder for me, which can then be emptied with one click of the mouse!

Companies pay a fortune to keep junk out of their inboxes... more than the average householder could afford.
