An education:

With the release of Bill Lyons Graf Zeppelin as freeware there have been several apperances of it in screenshots. This is all fantastic as I love Zeppelins and was even once in the process of making one to replace the Meigs Blimp. Now this brings me onto my gripe. A Zeppelin is not a blimp. I have seen several people refer to it as such and I cannot emphisise enough how wrong you are.

Let me highlight it further.
The Graf Zeppelin was 776 feet long. Thats 236.53 metres.

The Goodyear blimp is merely 192 feet long.

The Graf Zeppelin was 100 feet in diameter.

The Goodyear blimp is 59 feet at it's widest.

The Goodyear blimp contains 202,700 cubic feet of helium.

The Graf Zeppelin carried 3,700,000 cubic feet of hydrogen.

Now if that isn't enough we need to get down to construction. Stick a pin in a blimp and all you will end up with is a bag. There is no support in it aside from the gas. A Zeppelin is a rigid inflatable airship (or a dirigible). It's got a frame and the gas is in bladders inside of that. There you have the main difference between Zeppelins/airships and blimps.

Now what actually makes a Zeppelin is the fact that it was made by the Zeppelin comany. If it wasn't made by Zeppelin then it's just an airship or a dirigible. This

Hear ye all, for Woodlouse speaks well.  A Zeppelin be not a blimp, and vice-versa.   I've always known this, and also am a stickler for propriety.  The stats are interesting.  So. . . , now we all know, it's the Goodyear Blimp, not the Goodyear Zeppelin, and it's Led Zeppelin, not Led Blimp.  Cheers y'awl!!!

As far as I'm concerned Zeppelins, Dirigbles and Blimps are all big elliptical floaty-thingies. :P ;D

How very interesting. I knew the difference, but it was still an  interesting read. ;)

Zeppelins are fascinating in the fact that you will probably never see one. It seems strange because you can see all kinds of vintage aircraft you know where to look, but I don't think that there is a single airship flying in the world today. Because of that, they seem almost mythical to me.

...That is unless I'm grossly mistaken and there some kind of airship club out there somewhere.
