An idea for NFL pool expansion

Postby Craig. » Mon Jul 18, 2005 5:55 pm

This is just an idea for those wanting to take part this year. I am addressing it early so others can suggest other options or dismiss it quickly so its not tied up with the main thing in a few weeks.
Basically the idea is to perhaps add a bit more fun to the game. Each person involved selects a player for the season, can be any. Then for each major thing they do you get an extra point. For instance if you choose a QB, you would get an extra point for every TD they throw and every 100 yards they pass for.
Or perhaps if you choose a defensive player you get points for sacks and interceptions.
RB's for every 100 yards they run and TD's
And so on you get the point.
I would be willing to do all the extra calculations so as not to put anyone out to much. It could be added to the total correct column. And might make the scores either closer or further apart.
Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

That seems like an interesting idea but I don't know if it would work that well.  You would have to come up with several ways to earn points with each position (and probably the same number of ways for each position) or it wouldn't be fair.  It sounds interesting-but hard.  If you were going to do something like this, I would suggest picking a "player of the week" instead of the season then focus of how that player does that week.  So, a devistating freak injury can only hurt you one week and you can adjust for each week's schedule.

But, I still think it would be hard to do-for example, what if I chose a kicker; what would they have to do to earn a point?   ::)

again another reason i thought to ask this early to iron out the details.
I do agree about choosing week to week though.
As for if you were to choose a kicker. you get 1 point for every field goal kicked beyond a set distance? no point in doing PAT's as it could get silly and are rarely missed. If people want to provide ideas for this please do, i would be happy to put them together for a final approval type thing.

Ok, how about each week we have a certain position to pick a player from. Example, week one we do QB's, so that will even things up. Next week we chooce RB's. This would keep things fair, IMHO. I'm all for the idea though, spices things up a bit. :)

I think thats a really cool idea, and it would deffinately make it more fair if we have to chose a certain position each week (but we have to have 1 kicker week-just for the fun of it).  We should probably lay out in advance what positions will be picked each week (for example, week 1 QBs and week 2 WRs) before we really take a good look at the schedule.

Also, I think this should be a seperate catagory of the pool.  What I mean is, there really won't be a way to intregrate this into the current format-since it all has to do with win/loss records.  So, we should continue to do the win loss records-there should also be a seperate "points" catagory.

Sounds like an interesting idea Craig... but very complicated.  make sure you're not getting over your head here.

A kicker week?  Bring it on.  Akers has never failed me :)

(best kicker in the league, hands down, he just doesnt miss)

thanks for the ideas. I like the idea Ben. If you all agree we could give it a trial during the pre-season games. While it wouldn't be as accurate as regular, with players not always in a full game, but it would give us an idea of if it could work.

It can all be sorted in time. I'll start coming up with scoring systems which you can all pick apart.
As for kickers none can come close to Jason Elam, one of the most accurate long distance kickers in league history, tied for longest field goal(would be longest if they used the distance system they do now). highest scoring kicker i believe now, might still be behind morton anderson. And had one of the longest runs without missing a PAT. He's mine when that week comes up so we know ;) ;D

What about Longwell? Most accurate kicker in NFL history for a few years. Sure, he may not get that 52 yarder, but he just doesn't miss on the medium sized kicks. 8) 8)

Ok just as an idea then. As it would be a seperate points system it can be a little higher.
So if it were a week for QB's: TD could be worth 5 points, every 100 yards of passing is worth 1 point extra and every 50 yards rushing is 2 points. There could be points lost for sacks and interceptions, but that could be getting a bit difficult.
WR's: same system for points, 5 for a TD however 1 point for every 50 yards. Perhaps an extra 2 points for a single reception over 30 yards.
Kickers: 1 point for field goals 20 to 30 yards, 2 points for 30 to 40 yards, 3 for 40 to 50. and 5 points for 50+.
RB's: 3 points for a 100 yard game, 5 for 150 yard plus. 1 point extra for every TD run and 2 points for a TD catch.

Just some ideas.
Quite funny animation.

i do agree it will likely be complicated. But if we try QB's pre-season week one and see how it goes and choose from there? If you dont want to, then i am more than happy to keep it as it was last year as that in itself is good fun.
