This is the current MoD press release. Very sad news indeed. Sounds like there will be no survivors. Just hope it was mainly carrying freight...

An RAF C-130 Hercules crashed at around 1725 local time on 30 January some 30 kilometres north-west of Baghdad. The cause of the crash, and the extent of casualties among personnel on board are not yet known. Further details will be promulgated as soon as possible.

All British Hercs were new when purchased, be it a C-130K, or the new C-130J.

Lets wait and see, ther's no point speculating as to the cause, or who was involved...

Being a serving chap myself, I thought that this may be an appropriate tribute the the "Truckies" from Lyneham who were lost today, and the others onboard the fateful flight. In its various forms, this is one of my favourite hymns, and this is the first verse...

O ruler of the earth and sky,
Be with our airmen when they fly,
And keep them in thy loving air
From all the perils of the air:
O hear us when we cry to thee
From those who fly o'er land and sea

Ad Astra, my friends, rest in peace,

Chris

Those militant groups will claim responsibility for anything.
I could crash my car into a highway abutment, and they'd say it was their doing.

The MOD are not saying a word to anyone at the moment. And it sounds like they are getting highly annoyed with the news companys speculating on the cause. There is certainly something more to this than meets the eye, so its best to wait to see what they say.

I always thought that was the most likely answer. As Charlie said earlier, let's wait & see. No point in speculation. It's also a little tactless at the moment. :(
