In the last hour I've been followed from http://www.free-guitar-tablature.com/ around the net by pop up adds for porn sites >:(

ps. this has never happened before from this site, I've been using it for over a year and its never given me any trouble ???

pps. I've been unable to brouse the forums here because every time I open a window 5 popups open

ppps. are these kind of pop ups even legal?

yah occasionally i get popups on theese forums. . .but i think they are from other sites. . .after i scan my machine with ad-aware 6.0 they normally stop

Just run ad-aware 5 on my 'puter, so I'll see if it works... ...!
(It was already in my program files, I just forgot it was there...).... ...!
It's just a shame it doesn't stop the Junk mail arriving in my  Outlook Express...LOL...!

I've tried ad-aware and it didn't do anything >:(
there has to be a way to stop them, theyve started to open on windows I've already opened and I can't do f*** all about them

are you just running the Simviation site while all this is going on...?
I've been logged onto Simviation only, since 7:30 this morning, (12 hours so far), with no annoying pop-ups in the background.... ...!

Guys. From reading Craig's original topic carefully he suspects the spyware or whatever is causing these pop-ups came from the guitar site - NOT Simviation. Once these things are on your system it doesn't matter which sites you subsequently visit. I recommend trying AdAware as has been suggested. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
It's also possible this could be a virus which should be picked up by a scan with anti-virus software.

PS. I've just visited the site Craig mentioned. I notice it offers free software for download. It's quite possible one of these programs is the cause of the problem. This is a well known marketing ploy. On the other hand, the site might be completely blameless. This could have come via e-mail or some other source.

with the help of one of my friends I might have solved the problem, but somehow I just don't trust my computer anymore. I tried an anti-virus scan which came up with nothing, and tried ad-aware twice, got rid of a few unwelcome guests . But how can I know if it is gone?
Also am I right in thinking the browser security settings are controlled from: explorer, tools, internet options?
if so I have no security tab, only General, content, connections and programs

I think they are from an ad on the home
page for  'singles' the ad is gone now
but thats when it all started,
If you open"cookies" there are
a bunch of default cookie files
if you check they are the poppers
we're getting, just delete all of them!!
when they come back do it agin
"clear cookies" will not delete
"default" cookie files, but they are not
good for anything so get ride of them

I dont get a lot of ads cause i got Norton Internet Security and man is it an ad-killer. I still get some from time to time but nothing very bad. I think McAfee or Norton might have an internet security demo, go to their site to check it out.

It should, but the politicians havent done anything about it; its all about email spam (which BTW might soon be illegal )

Free surfer is the best free pop-up killer. If anything gets past it and anoys you, you can set ti so the ISP its sent from is blocked.
Perhaps getting a (better) firewall too, Zone Alarm is good, and free

Thanks Maccers. Not that I'm bothered by the problem myself but this looks well worth trying.  ;)
The alternative would be to use Opera for browsing instead of IE & forget about pop-ups for good. http://www.opera.com/

Zone Alarm is excellent. I wouldn't go online without it.
