What is Marmite??

Postby Apex » Thu Oct 13, 2016 11:49 am

Yeah, I Googled it, but would like a few simple answers based on my low brain cell count today. So I kinda know what it is, basically. So, in non-tech talk, anyone?
What is it good for? How does it taste? Can I spread it on waffles?

I ran into some article on Bing or where ever about some kind of Marmite shortage in Britain, this is the first I've ever heard of this stuff. Ingredients-wise it's not
too complicated so I've seen, lots of B vits too.

its vegetable extract made into a paste that has a very strong savoury taste,it can make your eye squint if you use too much similar to vegemite from austrailia but has higher salt content spreads on anything, hope this helps.

My experience of it was as seafloat said but although it's made from a vegetable extract it tasted very beefy to me. Strong but nice.

It seems 'Marmite' is owned by 'Unilever' which is a huge global brand and with the UK pound going down in value after voting to exit the EU, naturally import prices will go up over time. I suppose Unilever operates in global terms (maybe the $) & therefore trades in that currency. I think there is a store chain in the UK that had some kind of dispute with Unilever. Probably not a great idea. (I read international news). Other than that I can think of no reason why there would be a shortage of the stuff.

If we're talking 'Vegemite', here's a Primer...

Or this...

Although it does have what some may call a 'rank' Smell, it isn't too bad this way.

I left a small smear of Marmite on the butter........Apparently I have ruined Mrs Ex Pat's complete week and the contaminated butter has to be incinerated and the ashes sealed in a barrel and dumped in a very, very deep sea........
