SABRE Engine (new dawn for space travel)

Postby Travis » Mon Dec 03, 2012 4:27 pm

I visit Technabob every day for the cool gadgets and such.  I came across this article today.  It's a breakthrough cooling method for jet engine design, and apparently our ticket to single-stage earth-to-space travel. :o  Watch the video and you'll get a good idea of what it is.  You could also check out the Wikipedia article about it.

Pretty cool if I do say so myself. Now however, they will need an aircraft to test it on. Any thoughts on what's already out there? SR71 Blackbird
maybe?

Blackbird's been retired.  And I'm not sure there's an aircraft out there that could fly that envelope.  They may just build the entire aircraft to suit the needs of the engines.  It would be a monumental feat, but I'm not sure there's another option.

Skylon is the proposed vehicle for use of this engine. The wiki link in the OP has a further link to this.
