Free rival to Windows on the horizon ..

Good news for those who believe in competition. Reactos (wiki info)(BBC Report)is a Russian developed PC OS designed to run windows OS programs from W2000 onwards.

For me, news about competition and more choice is always good.

Thanks Pete! I'll give it a go and report back. I'll try the live cd version first. I'll say this, the .iso for the install is only 51.3 MB. I'm really interested to see what it can do!

If anyone else is interested, I had a hard time getting the download links from their site to work. That Sourceforge page they use is Here

**EDIT**
Before anyone jumps on me for criticizing the REACTOS team, let me just say this... I KNOW this is an alpha release! I'm not trying to make more of that than it is. I'm only going to post what I observe, good or bad.

That being said...
First thing I noticed is that on one of my systems anyway, it didn't like my optical mouse. Standard ps2 ball and roller type mouse seems ok. I am very impressed at how closely ReactOS looks and behaves like Windows! (So much so in fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd say there was shared code there somewhere...) More to come.

It always amazes me when people follow without question.

Look at apple users - Apple exercise full control over their market and people go for it en mass.

The positive side of me thinks these people are just slow on the uptake not to realize that buying into a controlled market is a bad thing! It's like the other side of communism but almost meets in the middle. Sure Apple may have a great product -- but in the long term the competition (like Samsung ... et al)

Alas I think M$ are believing their own press, that way madness lies.
The new Windows simulating version of Linux is on its way shortly. Needless to say I'll be seeing how FSX runs on that...
