Thank you for giving me this opportunity. The 1st grade teacher was the school principle with the school's main file cabinet. My mom told her I was still younger than the others (entering 1st) but she hadn't started me in kindergarten because we didn't have the means of transportation (had vehicles but Dad was at work and Mom had no license until they later divorced) and no bus was available until 1st grade. The principle arranged to put me in kindergarten during its operating hours and I was in her 1st grade room (doing 1st-grade work that counted for nought) until it let out and the bus took us home. Every morning, before starting classes, the principle brought out an artificial cake and asked if it was anyone's birthdate; I raised my hand on the ides of November -- but she had the cake put away while she told me to put my hand down, "...it's not your birthday!"One of my brothers couldn't start 1st grade because his birth date was in January.
