You have to remember that symbols such as the swastika are illegal in Germany. Hence why Wolfenstein is still banned.
If you look at German warbirds flying in Germany you'll notice that they don't carry certain markings

Here in Germany, anything that is a Nazi related symbol, specifically the swastika is illegal to display. Even a Hitler salute can get you a large fine and in extreme cases a prison sentence. Warbirds are not allowed to display them. Overseas Visiting aircraft to such displays must cover up these marking. Germany is very sensitive to it's past history.

Murder, dangerous driving, drugs and all sorts of other snazzy things that you see in games are still illegal too. Okay, it's their excuse, but it's just a game. The swastika maintains relevance because it's a WW2 shooter (of sorts).


I really wish they would ban the people who are deciding what is right and wrong for us to view    Lets face it, most people will just illegally download it if they cannot buy it, so the country might as well earn their tax money and just sell the games. e-shops and the companies themselves will just vend it anyway.

I have been living here in Germany now for the last 14 years and unless you move here, you will never every have a true understanding of the feeling that Nazi symbols produce. It also makes not sense to try and explain it when the UK and USA can only counter with freedom of speech and actions argument.

I can understand that there is a lot of tension over it, but I can't personally understand why that would be a deal breaker for every single citizen. I am sure that some people do see beyond it, and recognise it as a fault in history. It just bothers me that any person should be restricted in the potential to buy a game/video/music/whatever because somebody else deems it to be wrong.

I mean, on Radio 1 the other day, I heard that an Asian country was banning the sales of certain songs that they felt were bad. This included a lot of Lady Gaga amongst others. It's like... Wow. Did they really just inflict that on their entire country? Needless to say, if people give a damn about music, they will find it.

I understand the need to quash racism. It's a primative human trait that will run riot if allowed a free reign. However there are some things in Germany/ Europe today which are very questionable like the illegality of even debating certain issues.

But Doom was a great game! I played it for years and seem to remember getting through all levels eventually. Then went on to Serious Sam  [smiley=evil.gif] [smiley=evil.gif]
