With regards to vision, I would not recommend getting surgery on your own, for AFROTC cadets anyway. If you are selected for pilot training out of AFROTC and require corrective surgery, the Air Force will provide it. This may also be true for the USAFA and OTS, but I'm not sure.

However, as will all surgeries, there are risks, and one risk of any surgery on the eye is blindness, both permanent and temporary, so weigh the risks and rewards before going through with it.

Good point, I forgot to mention that.

Well this might suprise alot of you but my vision is 20/400. My contacts are -4.00 and im only 14 ;D :o ::)

Also im not even going to get surgery on my on for my eyes. If they select me for a pilot or before this will be most likely after college or in whatever but when my recruiter tells me "you'll need surgery" thats when ill get it so most likely im wanting them to provide it for me. I only want the surgery if it comes down to that moment when I need it. It might be to risky just getting it before everything is even close to starting. Although I have to take your advice Mobius and make sure if im close to get it done so I cant lose my slot. If I cant be a pilot then im not going to get the surgery although will I still need it for any other jobs with the Navy? Im interested in being a Captain of a Navy Vessel as my backup job.

I know the risks are small, I just wanted to make sure anybody reading this knows that there are risks.

That said, if the Air Force offers me a pilot slot, I'm taking the surgery. (-2.75 both eyes).

EDIT -  didn't see tcco's post when i made mine.

I'm not sure if the Navy does it the same way, but for AFROTC, pilot, nav, and air battle manager slots are assigned to juniors, all other jobs are assigned to seniors, so it would be in college if the Navy does it the same way.

Then again, you have to be stupid to fly a plane off a 500' runway, so they might do something in a way that makes even less sense than the Air Force. :P

Yeah well im only planing on getting surgery when it comes down to the point where I need it not just going to do it freely on my own.

I also have a cartilage growth that comes out my right knee. Ive been to the doctors many of times for it but its not a tumor or anything although it looks like it is and the doctor says its normal just happens when you fall sometimes a plate falls down and grow a bone or something like that.
So he told me no surgery till im 18 or so because it grows when I grow. Although he said its your desicion whether to get it removed or not although it shouldent effect anything with it. I dont really wanna get surgery on, not because im worried about that but just maybe my leg wont be the same as it is physically.
Will the military require that I get it removed even if its not a problem to me?
