I don't know why but I absolutely have no idea what to say about this topic. Very mind boggling. :-?

Isn't there supposed to be an exception to every rule?

How can you lay off a hardworking Newfie because of a technicality? What on Earth is he gonna do, chase a ball or lie on the sofa licking himself?
He's a Newfie!! They need to work!! They live to help us, and they're more reliable than most humans!!

>:(  >:(  >:(

"...not suitable"... on what grounds? I mean, seriously? Can any human outswim a Newfie, or haul more weight in the water? Is any man braver than a dog, or more reliable or obedient? Does any human enjoy an honest days' useful work more than a working dog?

And the problem with his safety on the ATV (like they really care about that) is easily solved: tow a cart behind it with Bilbo in the cart. Might be useful for other stuff, too.

These nattering nabobs of negativism can't be allowed to get away with this so easily!

agree'd lol

Seriously though, as usual beuracratic nonsense takes over from common sense. Sadly it'll probably take a tragedy make them realise his usefulness.

We've been to Sennen the last few years, he's great. The kids love him and he really helps to get across the beach safety message.

It just seems a real tragedy to obliterate all the diversity in the world......so dogs are banned on beaches, so what, if the council say he's a lifeguard then he's a lifeguard.

Let him on the beach, they will be responsible about how and where he 'goes'. Dogs are only banned from beaches because of irresponsible owners.

All together now "Bilbo must stay......sit, stay....."

Dogs are often more trainable than people. For most of my school years we had a dog named Stubby (due to the short Spitz legs under an otherwise Spaniel body). I was surprised to find that the first dog in the the U.S. military -- the 102nd infantry, New England (Yankee) Division -- in WW1 was named Stubby. He attained the honorary rank of Sergeant via combat promotion, eventually accumulating about a dozen honorary medals [click here if you want to read about canine service records: Stubby's write-up is the 4th down, next to last].
The legal age, with parental consent, for entering U.S. combat military is 16. I doubt many dogs reach that age while in service, let alone upon entering. We didn't refuse their service on that account: when we hit the beaches, they were there -- often on foot (er, paw) no matter how many of the locals complained (usually with gunfire or explosives).

Dogs are only banned from certain UK beaches because they're classed as a hygiene risk (they can't use a conventional lavatory..) so I can't see where the problem is, so long as the other lifeguards have pooper-scoopers and plenty of plastic bags..

Humans get up to a lot worse on beaches, that's for sure.. I've seen it (and been involved in it.. albeit in my youth  :o  ;) )

Red tape gone mad.
