I've done it all, including a stint as a theater tech director. Not very knowledgeable about lighting theory, control (programming and running the board, etc... a smart director knows how to delegate!!), but I've done more hang & focus sessions than I care to remember, and a guy can learn a lot working with a good LD.
And I only dropped one par can from a Genie lift in my entire career... not a bad record. Didn't even hit anybody.

I very rarely do that or live sound anymore... I work full-time installing permanent A/V systems. Everything from videoconference rooms to arenas.

I do quite a bit of lighting at school and outside. Have had the pleasure of using the avolites Pearl 2000; lovely desk.

Rottydaddy, have you heard of something called a Sirius 24? I'm sure you have!! That's our school desk  :)

Heard of the Sirius line... but again, I'm not lighting board-savvy. I'm not even sound board-savvy anymore; there's a "latest and greatest" coming out every five minutes, it seems.

The Sirius isn't the latest and greatest lol. It's an old desk but one of if not the best lighting desk Zero 88 bought out.

I happen to be one,  but not as experienced as rottydaddy.  I work in a local theater doing lights/ sound/ spot/ sound effects. Been working there since November.  ;D

The only lighting stuff I've ever played with is ETC... the Expression boards, etc. Installed an ETC system, dimmers and all, recently in a comedy club, assisted by some Polish electricians who spoke no English. No, the place has not burned to the ground yet.

So where did you do all your rigging? Profession or spare time?

In my spare time? Who does rigging without getting paid for it?!
I won't even pick up my speed wrench unless I'm getting paid.

I learned to do that stuff in a 500-seat regional nonprofit theater- it wasn't fancy; a dead-hung grid with the usual stuff. But occasionally we'd rent Cyberlights, etc. I've also been a follow-spot operator, and oh yes, when I used to TD a nightclub, the light board ops would sometimes let me play with the dance floor dconsole... can't remember what it was, but it was fun! .

Occasionally I've hung lights or speakers in my freelance stagehand/sound man work... no big systems (thank God).

The last 7 years or so, I've done quite a bit of sound rigging for permanent installs, some of them fairly huge, all over the USA. Usually I've worked on a team under the supervision of someone certified or whatever, but now and then I have to come up with something on my own. I enjoy that, as long as I have everything I need to make it safe.

I help out with sound (and rigging lights) in my school theatre....not a big place, 140 seats.....good fun though, although often very tiring.....(Had a run a few months ago of 2 plays and a concert back to back....ended up spending 18 days in a run in the theatre....

We have an ETC lighting desk....don't have a clue about it though....all I know is the basics

That's a nice theatre that. Nice soundcraft sound desk too  :) We also have a spirirt at our school - the Folio SX. Actually we have two.

At a local tiny theatre (99 seats + 1 wheelchair) I sometimes help in there is an ETC desk. That's the express 48/96, lovely litttle desk but very dodgey when it comes to saving the show onto floppys!!

We never have any movers in at our school, although I do go down to the local hire company and get to play with some of the stuff down there  :D

I spent 12 years as a freelance Stage/Production Manager, lighting designer/tech/operator on everything from very small community productions to Grand Opera. I dabbled in sound operating.... only because I had to at times ..... besides that the equipment is too heavy.

THIS is what I learned to operate on ...... somewhat ancient now but could probably hold it's own against some of the modern digital boards.

Looks more impressive than some of the modern board too!!

Apparently I am told there was once a desk which had a DFA button which when pressed, made a chase across all the flash buttons. Sounds cool!!

I can tell ya though, its true!  Also I think the best excuse we use is "I don't know, I only run the sound"
