Now this is TRULY impressive. 900 meters in length, two stories high!

Anyone have info on this thing (specifically the Duga 3 prototype located in that 30 square kilometer area in the Ukraine..) apart from what is mentioned in Wikipedia?

I found this site. It is in Russian so I have no idea what it says, but a there are a few pictures of it.

Duga3

Just imagine living in those flats. You would not need a microwave (not that they had one). Just put raw food on the table, stand back and wait (the power on some woodpecker transmitters was estimated to be as high as 10 MW EIRP). :o

EDIT. The picture below is Zagorizontnaya radar Duga-1 at Chernobyl.  If you use Firefox translation tools, it does a pretty good job.

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

That thing was the main reason for the building the Chernobyl plant... the leftover power could power the city itself.

For more interesting stuff (even larger ones) use google maps to look at Sary Shagan (kazakhstan_... that was the radar test site of the former ussr
