Sister Cities?

I was browsing through the Spokane, Wa page in Wikipedia, and noticed at the bottom that, "In the cultural exchange program known as "Sister Cities" Spokane is twinned with:

Nishinomiya, Japan since September, 1961 (Spokane's first sister city)
Limerick, Ireland
Jecheon, South Korea
Jilin, China
Makhachkala, Russia

Bristol - UK (My city)

Twinned with;

Hannover, Germany
Bordeaux, France
Porto, Portugal
Tbilisi, Georgia
Puerto Morazan, Nicaragua
Beira, Mozambique
Sergovia, Spain
Guangzhou, China

Bordeaux and Hannover are the biggest though....

Bordeaux and Bristol have had trade links for centuries with wine and wool being common commodities that were traded....I've no idea on any of the others though. There's been lots of publicity recently (last year) as it was the 60th anniversary of the first two twinnings :) )

It's quite common in Europe. Some seem to have links, others don't.

A notable link is the city of Lincoln, in the county of Lincolnshire in England. Lincoln is twinned with a German town called Neustadt an der Weinstra

While living in Adelaide, South Australia, I saw a sign that showed their sister cities as Austin, Texas, USA and another city in Japan which I just looked up: Himeji, Japan.

Also sister cities with Christchurch, New Zealand and Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia.

Since Philadelphia is right across the river from me, I consider it my home city so here is the list of it's sister cities.

Philadelphia has ten sister cities, as designated by the International Visitors Council of Philadelphia (IVC):

Florence, Toscana, Italy (1964)
Tel Aviv, Israel (1966)
Toru[ch324], Poland (1976)
Tianjin, China (1980)
Incheon, South Korea (1984)
 Douala, Littoral, Cameroon (1986)
Kobe, Japan (1986)
Nizhny Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia (1992)
Abruzzo, Italy (1997)
Aix-en-Provence, Provence-Alpes-C
