We have a winner!

The following mind-boggling attempt at a crime spree in Washington appeared to be the robber's first (and last), due to his lack of a previous record of violence, and his terminally stupid choices:

1. His target was H&J Leather & Firearms, a gun shop specializing in handguns.

2. The shop was full of customers - firearms customers.

3. To enter the shop, the robber had to step around a marked police car parked at the front door.

4. A uniformed officer was standing at the counter, having coffee before work.

Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up, and fired a few wild shots from a .22 target pistol. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, the police officer with a 9mm Glock 17, the clerk with a .50 Desert Eagle, assisted by several customers who also drew their guns, several of whom also fired.

The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons.

No one else was hurt in the exchange of fire.

47 casings and 23 wounds.  Fewer than 50% of the rounds hit the guy at relatively close range.

Stupid criminal but pretty pathetic performance by the cop, clerk and customers.  I'd bet that the cop was the most accurate and everyone else was way below 50%.

At least they didn't hit anyone else.

What about this one...

(August 2006, Brazil) August brings us a winner from Brazil, who tried to disassemble a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) by driving back and forth over it with a car. This technique was ineffective, so he escalated to pounding the RPG with a sledgehammer. The second try worked--in a sense. The explosion proved fatal to one man, six cars, and the repair shop wherein the efforts took place.
14 more RPG grenades were found in a car parked nearby. Police believe the ammunition was being scavenged to sell as scrap metal. If it wasn't scrap then, it certainly is now!

Also, it seems to me the whole incident probably took place in only a few seconds. Just picturing the scenario in my head, the guy walks in fires a few shots and then everyone else returns fire at once with no time for well aimed shots. It's speculation of course, but how else do you end up with 47 spent rounds?

Guy stands in or near doorway and gets 47 shots back at him of which 23 hit home. That leaves the possibility of 44 rounds exiting the building into the street.......passing cars, people etc, etc.

Actually depending on what they classify as a "wound" perhaps 11 rounds went straight through and one didn't.  That would produce 23 rounds with 46 of the 47 shots traveling beyond the target.

But anyone trained to handle a gun properly knows you never shoot unless you're aware of your target and what's beyond it.  That goes for simple target shooters and Saturday plinkers all the way up to SWAT members and soldiers.  Basic gun safety.  Sure doesn't stop folks (police officers included) from shooting unintended stuff though.
