It's in Dubai.  It doesn't look like much, but maybe it'll actually look pleasing to the eye when completed.

It's supposed to look like this when it is completed.

What a stupid location for a 1km high building, like there isn't enough room in that desert... ::)

.......and how much will it cost to rent a sq ft of office space on these higher levels ?........insanity, I tell you.....insanity !   :-/

btw, I've climbed the stairs on the CN Tower many times back in the 80's, so for anyone who hasn't done this sort of thing, when you get a chance, take a run at it. The elevator will be very welcome for the decent back to the ground .......... :-[

Yup, everyone is going to out-bid eachother for bragging rights.  "My office is higher then yours".  Then on the 1st day the long elevator ride to work will quickly convince them they made a mistake.  Imagine how fun it would be to stand in line for an elevator during rush hour, then stand in said elevator for 15 minutes as you ride to the top.  And then some jerk presses every single button and gets off at the next floor...

I reiterate my earlier question:  Who will be the first person to make a heli-port add-on for this building?  ;)

The first one has the nickname "helter skelter" .. It's easy to see why!

Yeahhh.... I kinda like it though....I think London's been long overdue for some decent skyscrapers to compliment its skyline.

There's more skyscrapers coming up that I couldn't find pictures of... for example, there's one that's a vertical wedge-shape, and it was shaped like that just so that people could still see st. pauls... ;D

That building is insane though, masssssive. Will be amazing to see in real life!!

I think he's referring to the classic economic reason to build up instead of out: the high cost of land.  The cost of land is driven by supply/demand, and in a place like New York or Chicago there's high demand and limited supply.  In the desert though there may be high demand but supply is pretty much unlimited.  So to get the same acherage they could cheaply build a giant 1 story building instead of a tall building.

I think the point of the building though is ego stroking, not economics.

I agree with your assessment of building up rather than building out.  However, I think this is more of a phallic symbol than anything else.  If the Americans, Taiwanese, and Malaysians can have their phallic symbols, then why can't the Arabs?  The article pretty much admits this much.

But looking at the design, other than trying to get as tall as possible, how much usable space will be in the upper floors?  It looks like when you get so high up, you just might have an elevator and one office suite.  It looks like there's not enough room for much more.   :-?

Can you say "worlds highest observation deck" ;D Be wary those who feel vertigo ;D

& the small fact that the thousands of people working/living there aren't gonna want to drive out into the middle of the desert every day  :P
