Now would be a good time for a holiday in the US. It's apparenty due to the poor performance of the US dollar compared with the Euro & other currencies. If this continues it will put up interest rates in the UK.

Taxation is one problem, but the other is, why do you think that products are so cheap in the USA? Because they are so dam expensive here.

I won't brag but 70% of my income goes in direct taxes in Hungary as I'm a foreigner rather than a mere 40% for natives. We have a minimum of 20% AFA (like VAT) on everything. We're the second most expensive place in Europe (after Britain) to buy petrol. And they've just given the poor teachers a pay cut!

I disagree on the tax issue. The most noticeable difference in price is on what is called 'luxury items'. This can cover almost anything & varies from electrical/electronic goods to motor cars. The manufacturers set the prices & it has nothing to do with the government. As a general rule I've found this type of product costs the same amount in pounds as it is in dollars in the US. At the current exchange rate of $2 to the pound, UK consumers are typically paying twice as much (before tax) for the exact same product as consumers in the US & most countries in Europe. This is why they call it "Rip-Off Britain".

Actually Doug you're right there. My friend Steve ordered some books for me off Amazon a while back. He eventually ordered them from the US and got them delivered express. It was still a heap cheaper than ordering exactly the same books from Amazon UK and getting them delivered through the post
I've since had many hours of enjoyment from said books 8-)

The taxes here are criminal.
