Hah...I'm now that old...But I do remember driving in cars without Airbags... ;D :D

Heh! I remember riding in cars with only lap belts... they usually had steel dashboards as well.

I remember tearing around the countryside, terrifying the Villagers*, on my various motor-bikes wearing just a beret, or a flat cap worn backwards, and held in place with a pair of ex RAF flying goggles... 8-)...!

...and a mouth full of flies...!!

Paul...The Need For Speed... ;)...!

Lap belts? Never seen them in a car. :o

Seat belts were first introduced in the UK in 1967 when all new cars had to be fitted with the 3-point type. This didn't mean you were forced to wear them. That didn't become compulsory until 31st January, 1983. I remember fitting my first set of seat belts to my Vauxhall VX 490 in the early 1970s. This was easy enough as the attachment points were pre-drilled. Clunk Click Every Trip

My old 1931 Riley 9 Brooklands open cockpit 1-1/2 seater, GP racing car did not require seat belts to be fitted at all, even to this day.
So that in the event of an accident...
...hitting something solid at speed would result in you either being catapulted through the air, arms and legs akimbo...
...or...
...if the car turned over, neatly decapitating you in the process.

Neither outcome could really be recommended...
...trust me... ;)...!

Paul...I now love "Modern Stuff", where you just push a button and the engine starts... :-*...!

My '62 Catalina & '75 Chevy pickup still have lap belts only, while the '72 Triumph GT-6 has a 3-point as stated earlier by Doug.
