my mom and i own 4 cameras.

Film:
a nikon N60
Nikon N60

Digital:
Nikon D70
Canon Powershot S50

now the cool thing is we still prefer slides over the digital. we have plenty of slide film still unused. now usre we like the digital and all, but our N60 is the best thing we had. we weren't to happy with the N80's lack of features.

sad to see them go, I came close to buying a minolta.

Cameras me and my wife have:

Film: none, too frickin expensive and a hassle to develope. Although to be fair I don't see real photo purists and professionals ever giving up film.

Digital:

Nikon D50 DSLR
Sony 828 8 MP
Sony 717 5 MP
Sony P200 7.2 MP

Digital just makes so much more sense for the average person to own a digital. For one thing MOST not ALL Americans are all about instant gratification and digital gives you that. No having to take the roll down to Wal-Mart to get developed, and better still you can go down to Wal-Mart and they have a Photo Kiost that will print your pic from any card. So you don't need to own a PC. As far as the cards going bad, I have my pic info saved in several places, at an online service, on cds, on the PC, and one of several photo viewers. Digital cameras can be purchased very inexpensively any more. They even have disposables.

Having said all that, I don't really see film going anywhere anytime soon., but digital is here to stay and they will improve as technology always does.

The biggest disadvantage with digital which you don't get in film is that in film you have something in your hands that is visible. A tiny microchip can so easily go wrong and you could loose hundreds of precious pics if it gets damp or dropped etc. If you have film you have it for ever and it can't go possibly wrong.

Unless you expose it to light, extreme heat, or humidity... ;D
Granted, until backed up or printed, digital images seem very vulnerable, but not really more so than film.
Ultimately, I'd love to shoot on slide film, develop it myself, and use a high-quality slide scanner to digitize the images, but... $$.  :P

I really think it will be a long term mistake. When people get bored of the whole digital image fad, and it will happen, sales will drop and the only photographers again will be those who buy the top end digital stuff, and those who prefer to use film. I would really like to do slide photography, but thats all but gone now. Used to own hundreds of them from our time in Canada.
Like most of you, I'm part of the 'color' generation. My first camera, however, was a gift from my mom; she didn't believe in using color film (I had to buy my own -- she'd only get B/W for me) although, and, maybe, because, she had a kit to color B/W photos. When the power goes down (aside from making things particularly cold this time of year), I find viewing standard photos by candlelight is still preferable to digital.
