However anybody who has cycled on ice knows it is very difficult to stay on the bike, so it can't of been icy enough for the car to lose control due to severe road conditions.

So it's not possible for only one side of a road to have ice on it then??

Indeed it is possible. Or the black ice can be in patches. I've had several narrow escapes with black ice myself over the years. If anyone had been in the way they would probably have been killed. On one ocassion if a tree had been in the way I would have been killed or severely injured. I was sitting in the passenger seat at the time & we were careering sideways across the central reservation of the A23 completely out of control.

LOL Doug, I was using sarcasm.

I was pointing out Delta_'s quote:

Of course it could've been icy enough for the car to lose control - just because there was no ice where the cyclists were, doesn't mean that there couldn't have been ice anywhere else on the road.

Bearing in mind that the car was probably doing 50mph & the cyclists were probably doing at least 20mph - that leaves a closing speed of 70mph.

The overall stopping distance for a car travelling at 50mph is 53m (175ft) (on a dry road) & the highway code advises to multiply that distance by 10 during snow or ice conditions.

That car could've started sliding on ice anywhere between 0 & 500m away from the oncoming cyclists. It doesn't mean that there will be ice where the car ends up.

I'm not having a rant, i'm just stating my point of view.

Cheers,

TSC.

I realised that. I was simply emphasing your point. ;)

I had nightmares for months after the incident I described. Both I & the driver of the car were completely helpless & there was nothing either of us could do about it. He was a very good driver & never drove above 50 mph. It was a perfectly straight dual carriageway but we hit a patch of black ice & spun round a couple of times before sliding broadside onto the central reservation between two darned great trees. We were extremely lucky to get away with it.

PS. The car was a Ford Zephyr 6 mark III which was well-known for a touchy back end.

Ahh - excellent use of sneaky sarcasm Doug - I feel congratulations are in order (luv sarcasm I do) ;D

It's quite scary how things like that & 'shock' can affect people isn't it - even for long periods after traumatic events.
