At least the veteran came home and he/she may be suffering from PTSD. But there are ways to combat it. The way I chose is forbidden as a topic on the forums and all that know me know what I'm talking about and I will not mention it out of respect for non-believers.

I think I know what you mean...;)

Nobody is perfect, not even military.

But you can't let a few bad apples cause you to think everyone is evil

Never did I say that "all veterans are evil"!

Please read a bit more carefully...

A finall post then I will never again come back to this sight!....now now don't misunderstand! not Simviation.
I mean this forum.  Where did all this vets stinking of booze and being lazy stuff come from?  Adopt a Soldier....not a vet....Adopt a Soldier...not his/her politics....Adopt a Soldier....not anything other than that!
Geez some times I can't figure out how people get politics into something so simple like....Adopt a Soldier.
Does anyone know what the program is about?  It's about getting chewing gum and magazines to some guys/girls from many different countries stuck by choice or not (they did join...no draft).  I think some of you are making a Space Shuttle out of a bottle rocket!

Again, thank you for your time.

Just goes to show ya, no good deed goes unpunished. For those interested, please join us in helping the young men and women in the mideast. For those of other opinions.... do whatever you like. I don't consider soccer, football... but I don't condemn those who do. This is an act of kindness nothing more nothing less.

Locking this for now as it has appeared to have gone south. Noble starting point, but it is headed in the wrong direction. One of the other moderaters can unlock if they feel that it is appropriate.

I see this topic has been unlocked. At the risk of starting it all off again this gives me the chance for some observations.

Well as the original post reads "Adopt a soldier"

Quite so & anyone is free to adopt a soldier if they wish. This means a soldier on active service abroad so I have no idea how the subject of veterans came into it.

1.That means Any soldier from any country

2.Adopt a soldier not his politics or his country's politics.

3.I'm sure Greybeard certaintly does not view anything on the web as U.S. only.

That might be so but the site from his link is obviously concerned with American soldiers. Here's a direct link to the page. http://www.flying-fogies.com/adopt_a_soldier.htm
I've read it carefully & see no mention of other forces. Some of the "life's essentials and treats" listed would be quite unfamiliar to soldiers from elsewhere & the contact details are via the US Post Office. If people from other countries wish to adopt a soldier they would probably prefer to be put in touch with one from their own country. There are existing organisations to do this in most countries with soldiers serving abroad.

The question here was about thanking them for what they're doing. This is as alien to me as it is for Bjorn. While it might be traditional in the US, if I were to adopt a soldier myself it would not occur to me to thank him/her for what they're doing - nor would they expect it. Differences in culture are often misunderstood & can cause bad feelings as in this thread. The whole point of this forum since it was first set up is to welcome people of all nationalities & promote understanding & friendship between them, not to cause arguments & bad feelings.

Remembering my time in W.Germany and the Gulf I can clearly remember that the only letters I got on both occassions were "You're dumped!" ones.... maybe we should encourage fit young attractive ladies to write to those poor soldiers far from home (including photos naturally).... now that I think could catch on ;)

I imagine that's quite a common occurence. There are quite a few female soldiers in the forces since those days so maybe some members here would like to correspond with them.

I used to correspond regularly with a good friend serving in the RAF. This was many years ago & he kept asking me to put him in touch with nice young ladies for him & his lonely mates who hadn't seen a woman of any age for goodness knows how long. I don't know how he expected me to do that as I was in a similar situation regarding nice young ladies at the time. If I'd found any I certainly wouldn't have shared them with anyone else, even one of my best mates. :D

A very good point Doug. Until now I've avoided this thread entirely as I couldn't understand why everyone was going on about veterans... ::) :)

There are quite a few female soldiers (/sailors/airwomen) in the forces since those days so maybe some members here would like to correspond with them.

Not enough IMO... ;)
