We were at Friday's one day and the service really sucked.  So to make our point, We left a 2 cent tip and a not saying "You earned this!"  As we left and went walking up Michigan Avenue, the waiter chased us down and accused us of not paying the bill at all.  We showed him proof, then went back and chewed the manager's butt up and down for embarrasing us in front of several hundred people.  At the end, I think he was just glad to get us out of the store...  The best way to get even with a restaurant person is to get REAL loud in their restaurant.   ;D

Many of my freinds are in bands, and usually after a show we will all go to Perkins which is open late. We always make sure to leave a tip because for a waitress to put up with 20 loud guys who are being stupid must be pretty hard. :P

TB - that's not a "tip" in the strict sense - it's more like "client awarded Hazardous Duty" allowance...

I know what youre talking about!

I once had a sandwich at the hotel where I stayed in Canada. So when I was finished, and had to pay the guy, I gave him 15 % of the bill, and the guy looks at me, calls me an assXhole, and leaves.   (remove the X  )

That's odd, I live in Canada (Toronto be precise) and 15% is a very high tip ! So that guy is much much too greedy.

This is a general rule of tipping.

If the food is good, and the service is good, please TIP.

If the food is bad, and the service is good, tipping is still required.

If the food is good and the service is bad, forget the TIP.

As far as I have known it, service charges applies only to any table with 8 or more people, since some people have known not to pay any tip while the servers dash around the restaurant to serve them.

However, I dislike the idea of having a service change, but rather tip, because if a service charge was implied, the servers don't have to do anything since they know that money will be in their pocket already.

I'm not dead set for or against, service charges.  Even with an included service charge, I may still leave a tip - in cash - the the waiter/waitress has been especially nice, however, I "justify" a service charge at times, thinking that the tips generally have to be shared with the busboys, and maybe the pool of dishwashers, etc.

And now for the other side of the serving line...

I knew someone who managed a very high-class restaurant...

He had a party come in (I forget how many were in the group) who bought over $400 worth of food.  He assigned is best server to the party.  The woman was careful to be sure the party was kept happy.  At the end of the night, they left...get this...only $4.00 on the table for her.  Because this party kept her busy, she had no other tables than night.  Can you imagine how crestfallen she was?

The manger followed the party out and asked:

"Excuse me, was there something wrong with the service?"

They all said no (sounding kind of confused that he would ask)...

"were you unhappy with the food, or your experience here?"

Again they answered no, that this had been the best time they had had in a long time...

Then he said "well, I suggest you find somewhere else to eat next time.  This is the sort of place where you're supposed to leave a fair tip"

Now for myself, I have worked as a server.  Anyone who thinks it's an easy job had better think again.  I don't mean to preach, but  remember that Servers (many of them women) don't get 40 hours nor do they get minimum wage....

Here's my experience with company distribution of gratuities. I used to deliver a large motorized paper route. Every year around the holidays most of my customers would leave a gift in their boxes. With many people leaving $10-$20 this could amount to a thousand or more every year.

One year however the newspaper sent a letter to the customers asking that instead of leaving a check or cash they instead send the money to the office and the newspaper office would "distribute" the money.

That year instead of a thousand or more the only thing I got for the holidays was a certificate for dinner for two at a small local diner (limited to $20). Needless to say I started looking for a better job not long after. Where did all that money go? Your guess is as good as mine but I hear they held one hell of a holiday party down at the newspaper office that year.

I heard that in New York especially, it is an unwritten rule to leave a high tip, simply because the workers (including taxi drivers, shoe shiners and restaurant staff) do not get payed enough money to be able to survive, let alone support a family.  A British news reporter did a study over there to find out if this was true and the shoe shiner, waitress and taxi driver all went crazy on this guy for not leaving a tip.
I guess working in a restuarant is ok here, when I was  working as a kitchen porter preparing foods etc I was getting paid

The party is simply being ridiculous and I know that servers have a very tiring occupation in which any gratitude of appreciation shown would be nice, especially after serving a huge party.

Even though my job confines me to an area that is no bigger than a garage, I have to put up with 22,000 prescriptions every month. About 90% of those scripts call for about 5 or more medications. Some of them even require mixing *try mixing Benzimycin with the right about of some wierd powder and alchohol while there are stacks of prescriptions to fill after that.

What I am trying to say is, even though a job like serving at a diner may seem easy to customers, NO JOB IS EASY regardless of job position.

Filling scripts is just about half my job, most of you know what my other half is. As an addition to those, I have to have extensive knowledge in Human anatomy, pharmacology, herdal medicines, drug interactions, drug mechanisms, drug indications, a wide range of paper work [try remembering forms like AF-Form 1150, etc.].

Again, no job, no matter how easy it sounds, is never easy.
