the storm shifted 10 degrees last night, which is a very good thing for New Orleans, however there is still a very high chance that the city could be flooded by the surge. The superdome is becoming from the sounds of it the worlds largest washing machine. Sadly though this change means Biloxi and gulfport are now directly in the path. Two towns/cities not built to take these storms very well.

Definitely a bad deal for the Miss. coast... Been glimpsing at the news this morning, and even in New Orleans, winds are bad enougn  to have torn apart brick-walled buildings and peel off part of the Superdome's roof.
Meanwhile, the" Darwin Award" stories are starting to come in:
Some dumbass who decided to ride out the storm in a house somewhere in the N.O. area finally calls 911 so "somebody can come get me"- in 120+mph winds?!
Seems he had a brilliant plan: to keep a hammer and crowbar handy so that, if necessary, he could bust thru the roof and clamber up there... in perfect safety, of course!! Too much TV, methinks, and not enough gray matter... at any rate, the water was already rising rapidly, and he was hoping he'd get some help (with Force-5 winds and levee-busting storm surge!!) before he had to resort to damaging the roof. ...!!
If I were the dispatcher, I'd have told this guy: "Sir, one important  reason the city ordered- not asked- the citizens to evacuate prior to the storm was so that nobody (in their right mind) could later claim the city didn't do enough for them. The mayor's office admits that other than opening the Superdome as a shelter, there's not much his office can do to protect you, in the face of one of the most powerful hurricanes ever to strike this city. Ain't nobody going out to fetch you, not until the storm passes. After it does, if you, the roof, and the house are still there, eventually you'll be rescued... until then, you unmitigated jackass, you're on your own!"

I for one never understoof why people started settlements at a place under that waterlevel. That's just asking for trouble.

Or dry out the sea to live on recaptured lands...

Ow wait! Damn I'm living on those lands! Few meters below sea level...hmmm

Which reminds me... how often does the sea try to reclaim Holland with powerful storms?

We're kinda lucky that the Brits take the punches for us. The Channel is like a protective barrier in that way. Although I recon we'll be in for some serious trouble in time. Just the last 3 years we had several "once in a century" kinda rainfalls, followed by some rather nasty floods. Perhaps not threatning entire cities, but enough to be really annoying.

Where I live...Haven't seen anything like it in my 20 years of living here..

The last "Big" Flooding was in the south-east regions of Limburg. oddly enough about as far away from the sea as you can get. Having said that the sea isn't the biggest problem it's the Rivers. Excess water from the Alps and stuff cause the most problems.

Now for the Small floodings like basement flooding and sewers not being up to containing all the downpour of water. Again haven't had any troubles yet but around the Country about 6 times or even more this last Month.

My Uncle told me a story once. They had some Aussie Crew at the naval base in some exchange deal....My uncle told them that they were 5 meters below sea level.....They never Returned afterwards ;D
