If I get kids [very likely if I get married], I wouldn't mind seeing my kid having to write "I will not curse in class anymore." up to 100 times on a chalkboard. If he cursed in class, he pretty much deserves it.

FAILURE forces an individual to learn from his or her mistakes so that they won't repeat them in the long run.

If a parent's child is not disciplined enough to learn manners or learn from mistakes, then that child WILL grow up as the kind of person who would ignore orders from his/her employer at McDonalds or from his/her superviser and/or First Sergeant in the military.

If you want a real laugh when I was at teacher training college we spent most of our time learning about paperwork and the law. We had virtually no classroom management lessons. Fortunately even back in my air cadet days when I did my junior and senior NCO's courses I'd come top in teaching as I used the methods my grandad had taught me, and he was a deputy headmaster! So the old ways work, the sociologist caring, sharing, blame society system don't!
Fortunately anyone over here saying they were a sociologist would be beaten with a big stick (mainly wielded by teachers)
Oh and my favourite punishment (after a Shakespeare translation, that is TOUGH!) is if someone can't behave I get them to hold a piece of paper against the wall with their nose, it is amazing how I don't get repeat offenders... apparently your nose goes really numb after 45 mins Parents here wouldn't complain, if their child wasn't learning then they'd be in deep poo!
I've only had one real problem, and that mother is in prison and her son was expelled. A very rare case...

That's how it should be. The end result is that they learn and come out of school knowing how to read and write, unlike some of our students today. Pathetic.
You'll find most children wil say they deserved what punishements they got when they were young  - it is just unpleasant at the time. In Heizsight years later they bless their teacher for doing everything he did.

Wrong. You don't pay him a single penny until he does the job properly. A builder like that wouldn't last long. He'd soon be looking for another line of work.

That may be their ignorant problem: they confused "failure" and "success" with "deferred payment." :-/

They actually passed a law in New Jersey here that teachers can't grade in red ink. They say that it's "demoralizing"

C'mon.

If you're stupid enough to fail, you deserve the red ink!

They want to change it to purple as the standard. But pretty soon, the kids will just learn to not like that color!

This world is too politically correct. Everyone's afraid to offend someone else, yet we do it anyway. I say everyone just speak your mind and the world would so much better.. :-/

Good point. How it made me so upset to see the book covered in red crosses and heavy writing, but it did me good and urged me on to do better. Personally as you say it is what you get used to and I doubt that once kids get used to purple their attitude to the ink will be any different.

Rimshot, we need to have some concern for others according to the situation but, somewhat in support of your statement:
It's been looked at otherwise but we make the words, the words don't make us. Yet it's historical fact that we change the meaning of words to our liking -- or by ignorance of one sort or another.
I'm not sure when the controversy began so that "handicapped" was politically opted for over crippled or similar terms. One of my cousins lost his legs in a motorcycle accident but he's done quite well for himself and I'm actually quite proud of him. However, when someone has goofed I've often heard someone say, "Sure, hire the 'handicapped'." Seems it was already part of a derogatory remark even before it became the "politically correct" word.
I was involved in training our air crews to get through enemy radar defenses. One of my tactics accounted for too many simulated shoot-downs and I was told I couldn't do that any more because it was too demoralizing to the air crew. My response is that their morale is blown to pieces if they don't learn how to counter the enemy's tactics -- isn't that part of the purpose of training?
Now what happened to the "fail-safe" button? Dang, it must have been deferred !
