Know anything about insects?

Postby TacitBlue » Tue Jun 28, 2005 1:43 pm

Just a few minutes ago, outside the front door of where I work I found something really weird. a dragon-fly with NO HEAD and it's still alive! I poked it with my pen, and it flapped its wings and tried to climb onto the pen. how does that happen? doesn't it need its central nervous system?

I know about cockroaches, which I think they are going to make the state bird of Florida (ours can fly, of course).

A cockroach can live for a week without a head.

An insects nervous system isn't like ours.
It stretches the length of their bodies, and is made up of different sections; each given different tasks.

So removing a dragonflies head likely won't kill it right away.
It's most likely to die a horrible blind and hungry death.

Basically the Dragonfly will starve to death, or die from  exhaustion, looking for its head :D

Dragonflies are awesome! They hardly fit the category of "pests", partly because they are excellent hunters. They love mosquitoes, which makes them friends of mine.
I love watching them buzz around- incredible flyers!!  They even mate on the wing, which is impressive. And to think that "airframe" design hasn't changed in millions of years (but they did get smaller, which is a blessing, I think)! I reckon that having their "motor processing circuitry"  spread out the length of their bodies helps them maneuver so quickly; they don't have to think about it much at all. The nerves in the head are probably mostly devoted to interpreting imagery from those incredible eyes they have. As for thoughts: I guess it's just three things: "Fly! Eat! Mate!!" My kinda people...;D
But yes, without eyes or mouth, it won't live long!

What got me to go outside and look was the fact that there was a dragon fly hovering and darting around the door. when I got out there I find a nearly dead one on the ground. I wonder if they were fighting. I don't know if dragon flys even do that.

A cockroach can go nine days without food (due to decapitation).
Frankly anything that eats mossies is a good thing in my book, I'm covered in bites and using Fenistil in pints!!!

I've got a "pet" spider just because of those goddamned mosquitos.

Spiders are also friends of mine. They're always welcome in my house, but I can't be held accountable if they rappelle onto my face, especially when I'm sleeping... ;D

i don't have any mosquito eating pets around here, but i do have something to get my sweet revenge on them ;D ;D

it looks like a small tennis racket, but instead of nylon strings, it has metal electric wires ;D ;D ;D

wih only two AA batteries, it deosn't look like it packs too much of a punch, but the capacitors inside charge it up to deliver a deadly jolt ;D

when you hit a mosquito (or any bug for that matter) it gets stuck on the wires, thus becoming part of the electric current

if you hold it on while the mosquito is riding the lightning, you can actually watch the sparks fly while it roasts (yes, there are sparks, smoke and even some noise)

i believe this to be the most satisfying invention ever created;D

i love the smell of burnt mosquito in the morning... smells like victory ;D ;D ;D

Moach

PS it hurts like hell when you stick your finger into it ;D
