Great aviation models..

Postby jrpilot » Sat Oct 09, 2004 8:43 pm

Hello, I was wondering on buying a aviation model and was curious who makes the best models...I don't want a wooden aircraft I want a diescast model...I no of to makers that are relativly cheap...I don't want a very expensive model that is why I am staying away from wooden aircraft but I don't want to have some peice of junk that has bad gear or something...I saw nice modes but wasn't to sure if they were detailed.  I am looking for a commercial jet.

This may sound abit odd:
I went to my nearest travel agent and told them straight up:
"Hi fellas, I noticed your L1011 TriStar model in the window, how much would you want for it?"

Few minutes later I walked out from there -  50 bucks poorer- but with a 5ft long model of one of aviation's beauties  ;D

Its not in metal though, and it does not have the landing gears extended, but it kick ass anyway  ;D

Pick up (or browse) any one of the airline-related magazines - Airways, Airliners, etc.  THey are usually chock-full of adverts for all sorts of models.

Take a look , for example, at the selections at Adams Jets : http://www.adamjets.com/Home2/home3.html

If you want some decent scale models for a reasonable price, get the Ultimate Soldier 1:18 series planes.  I have 9 of them hanging from my ceiling, and they are available for about $30.00 to $50.00 depending on where you get them.

Here is a link to where I posted some pics of them  The detail on them is incredible.  Just ask Mark (Ozzy72), if you want a second opinion...

Here is a couple links to them...

There is also a F-16 and F-18 in 1:18 scale from a company called BBI.  They are great looking, but a bit more expensive running around $80.00 to $100.00.

Also, look for Helicopters in the same scale.

I also saw some fantastic die casts (the Ultimate Soldier planes are plastic) at the hobby store I go to, I'll give further details on those later, but they were freaking HUGE!

If you want a huge collection, but don't want to have 1000 giant planes lying around (like who wouldn't want that anyway?), check out the Herpa wings series....smaller scale, but incredible detail.  Very collectible as well.
Great edit, Bob.

I'm not sure where one would get a good die cast one, but I do know that back two years ago when I was looking for information on the B-25 I ran across a web-site that was advertising for a 1/48" scale B-25J...

Now this airplane had all of the bells and whistles...

and it should for the price that they were asking!

$11,500 USD!  :o

Ebay has some of the older ones that are harder to find as well.   ;)

Well jrpilot we have several types at the museum that I know we stock:
They are either die cast or mahogany wood and most are of aircraft that served the Royal Canadian Air Force.
They start about $300.00 Canadian and I am sure different types could be ordered.  I do not recall a catalogue but the next time I am there...will check it out for you. :)
There are no model stores within a two or so hour drive of us so can not help you there.  Good Luck :).

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

I agree for a large P38 has a 36" wing span!) inexpensive highly detailed model this is it!!
I bought the P38 of of Ebay at a price double that they are in the stores. I was in WalMart last week just glancing through the toy section and saw the Spitfire MKI for $29!
the same thing that Dread gave as a prize in the screenie contest, and yes the winner is going to be happy when the prize arrives.
I had no idea there where more than 5, I'm looking to buy the P47 and P40, but can't be found in this area.
I also noticed that the Ultimate Soldiers (Motorworks) series which was found at WallMart where made exclusivley for WalMart and where released once, might be the reason they are hard to locate, and why the sell for double the price on Ebay, seriously thinking of going back and buying the last two Spits they had and then setting up shop at Ebay ;)
