New SETI Screen Saver running with {BOINC}

Postby Spidious » Sat Jul 10, 2004 11:49 am

If you have the SETI Screen saver. Go to the link below and download the new program "BOINC". It is a lot faster than the old program, and you can decide just how much downloads you want at one time !

BOINC > > http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/

Then if you want the really cool status logo like mine below go to

SETI BOINC STATS COUNTER > > http://seti2.mundayweb.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=8d58d024c20ce5acb0bd3f80fff01367

If you haven't joined up yet do it now !

If you would like to you can join our PT Cruiser Group athttp://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/team_display.php?teamid=34914. Or if Simviation has one it. Or start one up for Simviation ?

No,thanks. I'm not too interested in finding extraterrestial species, because they maybe could bring Elvis or Hitler back...;D

There was one running for SimV for a long time at Seti Classic... I just shut it down because all the members except myself were no longer participating.

There is a SIMV SETI Team for BOINC as well. :)

Is this one of thoes things were they use your CPU as a part of one big super computer. Avsim has something like that but they're searching for the cure for cancer, not alien life.

No,thanks. I'm not too interested in finding extraterrestial species, because they maybe could bring Elvis or Hitler back...

"Sure everyone is in favour of saving Hitler's brain but when you put it in a great white shark, woooo."

SETI@Home is the oldest of the "distributed computing" programs around. The Berkeley team pioneered many of the technologies now used by others in their projects.

They are now in the process of transitioning over to BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing), which is the latest generation of distributed computing software. Currently there are two BOINC projects, SETI and Predictor (protein chains). After downloading the BOINC software you can join either or both projects (BOINC handles the distribution). More projects will come online in time.

I participate in SETI because I believe in the cause. I'm sure there is life out there. I also like the idea that my computer does something useful when I'm not using it. :)

Besides, the aliens probably already have a cure for cancer if we can just get in touch with them. :D
