I have a big bar at the top that says 'Action Canceled' on it. I get that a lot on different web pages. Advertising just doesn't seem to appear. I wish I new how I did it, because it's pretty handy. Some pages get advertising, while other adds on the same page do not appear.
In Windows, you can go to Tools/ Internet Options/ Security/Custom Level and it gives you an option to de-activate ActiveX controls or to be prompted to allow them. This little step will keep spyware from your system also. You can add trusted sites that you know are safe (Like SimV) and they will be allowed.
Also, I have run across a time or 12 that a web site will have a pop-up that says you are required to accept a certain condition and you must answer yes. Actually, some of these are tricks to get you to accept their ActiveX controls and are totally not necessary. Try closing the window without accepting and see if you really need it. You may have to do that several times. One site, I had to do it about 15 times
Certain web developers (our beloved Pete being a most notable exception) are very tricky and will out ands out lie to you. be wary...
