As I arrived home from my golf round this afternoon I noticed I was dangerously low on beer. Damn. I knew that once I showered I would be in for the night so I went to my local convenience store for a 6 pack, noticing a handwritten sign on the door advertising "Cajun Boiled Peanuts".
My curiousity aroused, despite the fact that I had left my car running, I followed the clerk's directions to the back of the store where there was a huge crock pot filled with boiling peanuts. It was back near the "Big Gulps" and the deal is you fill up whatever size soft drink cup you want with peanuts. I got 32 oz for $3.
If you have never tried boiled peanuts you have missed a real Southern American treat. The best places to get them are "side of the road" stands where some local has a huge pot of them boiling. He will scoop out a bag of them for about half of what I paid for them. There is an old black guy that sells them in front of the courthouse in Ft. Lauderdale and I never miss the chance to take a bag home.
I'm not sure about the "Cajun" part - they might have put some extra spices in there but I couldn't tell the difference.
