Hmmmm, first thing that comes to mind is the SR-71 - although, I guess you could call the Space Shuttle a plane. . . .

How about the X-15?

This is a general quetion right now...as far as the fastest plane, are you talking about current flying planes, past production planes, experimental planes, plane modified just to break a record.....

The space shuttle breaks both records..17,500mph and alt of over 60 miles. But this is a space craft half the time

the X-15...as far as speed.... Mach 5, but it was an "X-plane"

SR-71...Both speed (Mach 3+) and alt.(100,000'+) but both these maybe wrong as the true info is classifed and it may or may not be a current flying plane.

or this one
Fastest Combat Jet
The fastest combat jet is the Soviet Mikoyan MiG-25 fighter (NATO code name Foxbat). The reconnaissance Foxbat-B has been tracked by radar at about Mach 3.2 or 3,395 km/h (2,110 mph)

The Mig-25 is in service as the recce version only, interceptor tasks are slowly transferred to Mig-31 squadrons

the fastest aircraft in service (of which the public knows) is the Mig-25. the Sr-71 was phased out 'as said' in fafour of spy satelites, but probably project Aurora exists (why did they phase out the fast high-altitude recce plane if they don't have any replacement)

Project Aurora has been reported at speeds around MACH 5 according to ground sightings
